I have wanted to tweet a thread about supervision for a while and I keep forgetting. So now that I am thinking about it again:

I strongly believe people who work with me (for their undergrad, masters or PhD thesis, or as my RAs) should take a class from me.

I think it helps.
Taking a class with me helps people discern if they want to work with my style, to my standards and using my methods.

There are people who love my supervision style and others who don’t think it fits them. That’s fine.

There should be a mutual match. Obviously ...
... I have graduated thesis students who did not take any courses with me.

But I think it would have benefited my students to have taken a class with me. </fin>

Quick micro-thread on PDF and physical paper organizing. Despite my retweeting Dr. Rebecca Stone @stone_prof in self-deprecating jest, for the most part (95%), my printed papers and online PDFs are usually very organized. I'll tweet the two blog posts I wrote on this topic.
@stone_prof There is a reason why I *sometimes* (not often) download the same PDF twice (or three times!) - I have sub-folders for the articles/chapters/books I write, with a sub-sub-folder for PDFs associated with said chapter, as shown below. I do this to keep the citations list clear.
@stone_prof A lot of people have suggested to me that I should just have ONE big PDF library from where to draw (that's the Mendeley approach, I think Zotero too, and I used to do that while I was doing my PhD). As a grad student, I believed in that approach. As a professor, not so much.

Si (como yo) usan plumines de colores para escribir, mis favoritos son los de marca propia de Office Max (0.3 mm). Una segunda opción (0.4 mm) son los rotuladores A-Ink. Ambos económicos (creo que menos de $70 pesos por paquete)
Si usan mi método de la Libreta de Todo (Everything Notebook) una opción relativamente económica es la Unicampus de Norma. Me molesta que recientemente subió de precio (creo que $175 pesos). Posiblemente Scribe tenga una versión más económica.

I am going to do a thread of snippets of wisdom that I have drawn from a broad range of writers. It's like the synthesis/distillation of all the books about writing that I have read. This wisdom applies to writers of books, articles, or theses. I'll try to number each tweet 1/n
MAKING SPACE: Most authors I have read (Joli Jensen, Eviatar Zerubavel, Stephen King, Helen Sword) recommend that people carve a physical space to do their writing. This ritualistic approach may not work for everyone, it does for me. I have 3 spaces where I work (home, office)...
... and my home office in my childhood bedroom at my Mom's house. I try really, really hard NOT to work in my dining table (I now have a big enough house that I can do this, but even when I lived in Vancouver in a shoebox, I had a little alcove that I used to JUST write thesis).

#thread on Friday I talked to Meina, a new member from the team.
She was telling me that in order to focus for a certain task when switching from another, it helped her to either meditate or play the guitar for 10 minutes, which I think is another way of meditation #thread 👇
She told me that sometimes she didn't do that, but lately, she was told to go do that by @emecibelli.
This is an example of great leadership IMHO.
A lot of times, managers push people to work nonstop not realizing that by doing that, they're making people be... 👇
... slower because they're not aware what their direct report really need to work better, happier and faster.
As leaders, we all need to listen and understands much more the people that work with us, because after all, a company is not more than a sum of people :).
