As a white person who was alive in 1971, tho I was very young, it does not surprise me at all that Reagan said this in what he thought was a private conversation with another white person. He knew not to say such things in public.
This is the key difference between Reagan and Trump. Trump is just too dumb and/or cruel to filter out the crude racism before it comes out of his mouth.

The President's grown son has retweeted this person's opinions about immigration. Here's this person invoking the white nationalist talking point that diversity = "white genocide."
This framing, that diversity = white genocide, was pioneered by the KKK a few decades ago when they realized that racism went down smoother if it was framed as white victimhood, rather than hate toward others.

If I could go back in time to 1977 and tell my 9 year old self as I walked out of the theater after seeing Star Wars for the 7th time that one day Luke Skywalker would "like" one of my tweets...I suspect my 9 year old self would say "huh? But, um, wow, I guess."
Bizarre coincidence department: Luke tweeted out this story yesterday about a cool project that my college roommate and friend has been working on for years.
It’s too bad he and I live across the country from each other, otherwise we could celebrate at a strange bar by drinking oddly colored liquids together.

One implication of this decision by the FBI is that the sitting President has favorably retweeted domestic terrorists and has met with them in the White House. He's been "pallin' around with terrorists," one might even say.
