I did more time in jail for two hits of acid in the 90’s than any officer ever arrested for killing Black people in this country.

They gun us down then go to a @davematthewsbnd show the next day and do the same “crime” I am a dangerous “felon” for.

#BlackLivesMatter
In practice what does this mean: because of homelessness I sold pot to survive from the mid 90’s until a little before 9-11. I was queer underage for most of it and had no family who could help.

I have more felonies than killers of #BreonnaTaylor combined.
Or #freddiegray or #TrayvonMartin or #SandraBland or #EmmettTill or any of these cases. Add them up I bet this country has pinned more felonies on me for selling an 8th of pot to little white kids.

As more Americans grapple with fundamental questions about race and the police, Fault Lines digs into our archives to share 12 episodes on the crisis in US policing.

From violence and impunity, to militarization and surveillance, a thread of documentaries about the police ⬇️
In Ferguson, protests in 2014 and their disproportionate, heavy-handed police reaction showed that the killing of #MichaelBrown sparked something bigger—exposing tensions that had been bubbling beneath the surface for years.
Months after the Ferguson unrest, we returned to investigate why the relationship between police and local black communities is fraught with distrust.

For many, #MichaelBrown was a symbol for an entire system unfairly tilted against black communities.

I'm tellin' you man, black folks, black Muslims, Arabs, Desis, Mexicans, etc., are out in the streets dancing to a tune so loud, they don't even know what key it's in. Because of this, many are unwilling and unable to acknowledge the main reason why
the death of #GeorgeFloyd has gone global, has gone viral, is because Chuck authorized it to go viral. The liberal wing of Chuck has authorized outrage over the death of a black man even though we've been dying at the hands of white cops and black hoodlums for decades!
The question I have is why did not white liberals authorize riots and protests when they killed #CliffordGlover, #ClaudeReese, #RandyEvans, #YvonneSmallwood, #AmadouDiallo, #SeanBell, #OscarGrant, #TrayvonMartin, #JordanDavis, #JonathanFerrell, #AiyanaJones,

Protests in Washington, D.C. this weekend were mostly calm during the day where moments of silence, marching, kneeling & speeches on police reform, race and inequality dominated.

But at night, a far different contingent emerged.

A thread of what @JackRodgersCNS & I witnessed: Image
What I witnessed regularly were moments like this one where a protestor would get close to the line, loudly yell, curse or gesticulate but mostly, ask police how they justify behavior that gets people like George Floyd killed.

(Photos by me unless otherwise indicated) Image
It was moments like this that I saw repeatedly.

And for perspective: there were literally thousands more instances of this below in the streets of Washington, D.C. this weekend than there were burning trashcans or shattered windows. Image

A THREAD on this tweet released by DOJ yesterday. I presume they think it shows an AG hard at work. But on a day when the country was fracturing amid protests over racism & police violence, the photo is a reminder of the absence of civil rts leadership in this DOJ. By contrast..
In 2014 while protests continued in Ferguson after #MikeBrown, an unarmed teenager was killed by police ofcr Darren Wilson, then Attorney General Eric Holder visited Ferguson, meeting with community groups and local law enforcement to signal the dept’s engagement.
Similarly, in 2015 Attorney General Loretta Lynch visited #Baltimore to meet with the family of #FreddieGray, community groups, civic leaders and local law enforcement.

On Friday, my CEO mentioned #AhmaudArbrey by name in her weekly all-company video message. It meant the world to me. Has your workplace acknowledged Ahmaud? Here’s why so few will & why they should reconsider that silence./1
78% of Black professionals say they’ve experienced discrimination and/or fear that they or their loved ones will. Yet 38% feel that their workplaces deem it unacceptable to speak about these experiences./2 hbr.org/2017/07/people…
This isn’t what “bring your whole self to work” should look like. The lack of acknowledgement can feel deafening and contributes to low satisfaction & engagement and low commitment to the organization./3

I am stunned and saddened by the sudden death of #ElijahCummings. What a powerhou5se, what a leader. He never stopped fighting for the most vulnerable, the most marginalized, the most needy.
1/
washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/10…
In the 17yrs I wrote for the Baltimore Sun, #ElijahCummings was a headline-maker. I shall never forget him at #FreddieGray's funeral excoriating the press: "Did you see him?" Cummings thundered over and over, asking why no one noticed Gray in life, but flocked to his funeral.
2/
#ElijahCummings led everywhere. He fought every day of his life for someone. We were fortunate beyond measure that he chose to fight for us as a nation, particularly these last few years, demanding we be empathetic. #RestInPower. We will not forget: #TheGentlemanWillNotYield

Remember in *2015* when former Baltimore cop & blackface performer Bobby Berger sold 600 tickets at $45 each for a fundraiser for the officers charged in #FreddieGray's death, before backlash caused the venue to pull out? [Archive pic of Berger from 1982] baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/…
Berger, known for impersonating 1920s-40s blackface performer Al Jolson, was fired by BPD in the '80s after off-duty performances drew the ire of the NAACP. He said he organized the 2015 fundraiser bc he knew how it felt to be suddenly w/o a BPD paycheck. baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/…
Berger was ordered by BPD to stop blackface performances in early '80s, sued w/ backing of @ACLU saying order violated free speech, lost, was fired, won on appeal, was rehired, & got $108K+ in back pay, legal fees & compensation for *humiliation & stress* baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/…

Tonight, two Baltimore police officers were found guilty of robbery, racketeering & conspiracy in a major corruption case. #GTTFtrial
The #GTTF (Gun Trace Task Force) was a Baltimore PD unit charged with getting illegal guns off the streets. 8 officers on the force were indicted in the trial.
The convicted #GTTF officers abused their power to carry out robberies. Federal prosecutors say the men stole hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and drugs, and regularly violated the rights of citizens. baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/…
