It's true. On the other hand, Russia is equally as obsessed with ethnicity. Finding Jewish roots in politicians or public figures you don't like is practically a national sport.
Also, in 2014, I worked the Hockey World Championship in Belarus. One of my colleagues was a black man from NYC. Locals and visiting Russian fans would take selfies with him as if he was a circus attraction and made comments I didn't dare to translate. Ex-USSR has major issues...
