An Al Sharpton Story
Here's a little personal story involving Al Sharpton. Back in 2003, I was leading a large corporation-wide task force to identify and eliminate any remnants of systemic racial bias within the company. It was a sincere effort, not a dog and pony show. 1/
Lo and behold, Reverend Al Sharpton decides to run for president. And his name came up in one of my private conversations with a black colleague who was also a close friend. My friend decided to bust my chops. He said to me, "So, are you going to vote for Sharpton?" I said no. 2/
So my friend said mischievously, "Ah! That's because he is black, isn't it?" I turned around and told him, "Look! I'll make you a deal. If you vote for him, I'll vote for him." He burst out laughing, and said, "You got me! No way I am voting for that man." 3/x

1. Trade War with China
This will be an enduring legacy of Trump. Let us hope Trump succeeds in reigning in China. China has cheated by stealing Western IP, and China has exploited weakness of Western leaders and international systems to amass enormous wealth and power.
2. China on its current course will be militarily unstoppable in a generation or two, and China will not be a benevolent power like the U.S. For the good of humanity, it is important to contain China without provoking an armed conflict, if possible.
3. Trade war with China is not painless for the U.S. The U.S. GDP is definitely going to suffer. However, China is hurt far more than the U.S. And that is the nature of all wars, of any kind. The warring parties all pay a price. I wish there were a better way. There isn't.

1. In a Land of the Blind One-Eyed Man is King: Joe Biden Edition!

With all the unhinged positions taken by many of the Democratic 2020 contenders debating in Detroit, and despite his various gaffes, Joe Biden came across as the only half-way sane candidate polling above 2%.
2. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are insanely doctrinaire, neither having any familiarity with math. Proposing policies that require more than doubling the size of the federal govt outlays, with U.S. being 22 trillion dollars in debt already, borders on clinical insanity.
3. The only other candidates polling above 2% are Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Kamala Harris gained prominence in the previous debate by pulling out the race card and beating Joe Biden over the head with it, and quite unfairly at that. Joe was woefully unprepared for it.

The Biggest Lie of the Night in Detroit Debate

Candidate after candidate is promising universal healthcare without raising middle class taxes. Just know this. No nation in the world has ever been able to do that without middle class paying far more in taxes than Americans do.
Elizabeth Warren: "For middle class families, out of pocket cost will go down for healthcare."
Yeah, out-of-pocket cost for healthcare can artificially be made to go down by jacking up income taxes significantly for the middle class (that's where most tax revenue comes from).
A person earning $30K a year in the U.S. pays 12% in federal income tax. In France the tax on that income is 30%. There is no free lunch. You pay one way or another. Every place on earth where you have universal healthcare middle class pays 2-3 times higher taxes than in the U.S.

This week I did some research on Mayor Pete Buttigieg's administration and South Bend. There's a lot more work I need to do on his policies overall, but specifically I looked into his approaches to housing and homelessness - both of which I think both deserve sharp criticism.
As this piece documents, many of the Buttigieg administration's topline numbers create the impression of success (in some cases fairly). huffingtonpost.ca/entry/pete-but…
But its strategy overall seems to have been heavily geared towards attracting private capital & gentrifying the city. Housing & homelessness policy provide two illustrations of how (to put it mildly) *limited* this kind of managerialism is in practice though toxic is more fitting

Hebron is the home of one of Islam's holy sites, the Ibrahimi Mosque.
It also happens to be a Jewish holy site named after Abraham as well.
