A good doctor is very forgetful.
It helps to forget that angry patient.
Forget your frustration with the lab for losing the blood.
Forget why you were irritated with your colleague.
Forget the young guy you diagnosed with cancer last week.
Holding grudges is exhausting. Sick people’s stories weight too much to carry around.
Let them pass through you. Keep your mental workspace clear. You have to make a hundred more decisions tomorrow. Let go of the ones you made today.
People love to talk about being in the moment. Living in the present. They don’t always mention that to do it you have to let go of the past. Forget. Release a memory into the void. Then you will have space to think about the next person who needs your help.
Don’t worry. No matter how forgetful you become, you will still remember. You’ll remember the lady who was in this bed one day 10 years ago.
Even when you get good at forgetting, you won’t forget. Some stories will stick with you always.
