(1/6) @abusenogender #justiceforjohnnydepp I've been on both sides of dv. I witnessed a close female friend abuse her husband.I also was in an abusive relationship with a man years later. There is no difference.DV isn't about gender. There r 2 roles and either gender can fill them.
(2/6)An abuser is a person who lacks self control and has the ability to inflict verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse on another person without remorse. It does not mean their attacks are premeditated, or that they are incapable or unworthy of love. It's mental illness.
(3/6) The victim is usually a person who spends the most time with the abuser in private, often an intimate partner, child, roommate, friend. The victim is placed in an especially tortuous position because they have to choose between defending themselves or submitting to abuse.
(4/6) This decision has nothing to do with one's mental or physical ability to defend themselves. It is a choice to take as much as they can stand, or physically/verbally assault someone they love in self defense. Rational people don't want to hurt someone they love.
(5/6) Submitting to dv doesn't make the victim weak. It means they are strong and compassionate enough to show sacrifice and empathy to someone they love in the face of extreme mental and physical torture. They've endured far worse than abuse. That strength deserves respect.
(6/6) How someone behaves in extreme circumstances is very revealing of their true nature. Tolerating abuse from a loved one doesn't show weakness of character. It reveals bravery, strength, and one who can survive while maintaining their integrity.
