The clash about the JPII Institute is really revealing of a philosophical divide that has been going on sine at least the time of Vatican II.

On the one hand there is the view that the Christian revelation of God also "reveals man" and judges history. Man and history cannot be understood apart from a particular historical AND super-historical agent, Christ
Then this new understanding articulates itself rationally, which historically has happened using the resources of classical metaphysics. But the articulation is subordinate to the 'originality' of the event of the incarnation
On the other hand there is the view that somehow world history itself is the revelation of man, and that Christianity is somehow "embedded" in this flow as an "evangelical yeast" but not as a radically new and original agent that "opposes" the world.
This can be called the "vulgar Rahnerian" view, but it is really an attempt at going back to Hegel's "Christian philosophy," out of a misguided desire to embrace the world, as is the world were not, in irreparable ways, rejecting Christ.
The outcome, of course, is always secularization, as evidenced by the trajectory of post-Hegelian Protestant theology.
