The wrongful conviction of Glen Assoun is fascinating in the way that any story involving murder, a serial killer, and a miscarriage of justice is bound to be. You can all read about it here: halifaxexaminer.ca/featured/dead-…

But it’s not history, it involves right here and now.
An officer compiled evidence that Assoun was innocent. It seems someone in the RCMP waited for him to go on vacation, then systematically deleted all his digital and paper files exonerating Assoun.
RCMP leadership investigated and seem to know who did it but have concluded it was an accident.

This isn’t remotely credible. Every day the RCMP doesn’t take action on this they’re continuing a cover-up.

City and provincial officials have said next to nothing.
@Tim_Bousquet This should be a federal scandal too since the Trudeau government had Justice Department lawyers conclude Assoun was wrongfully convicted but did nothing for 18 months.

But awkwardly the person who sat on the findings was was Jody Wilson-Raybould.
@Tim_Bousquet In fairness, Justice Minister David Lametti ordered a new trial within weeks of taking over after Wilson-Raybold acrimoniously split from the Liberals.

The Crown presented no evidence against him and he was finally a free man.
@Tim_Bousquet Jody Wilson-Raybould’s justification for keeping a clearly innocent man legally convicted of murder for 18 months (more than that, if she’d stayed in her job) was that she was waiting on another report:

This isn’t even getting into law enforcement’s fight to keep evidence secret at every turn.

Here is the (we think) final draft of the House resolution condemning anti-Semitism and other forms of hate. They’ve kept editing it to expand it. They scrapped the version from earlier this afternoon to add references to latinos and the LGBTQ community. docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/…
GOP Rep. Doug Collins is lambasting Dems for taking up a week editing the statement to keep adding more groups.

“I guess since we’re at it why don’t we have Mormons? Why don’t we add Jehovah’s witnesses?”

He said this could have been a simple statement that “hate is hate."
This resolution should pass unanimously. But it’s been a long, awkward week for Nancy Pelosi and Dem leaders who had to balance denouncing anti-Semitism with not appearing to unfairly target a Muslim member, Ilhan Omar, who denies she said anything anti-Semitic.

Marco Rubio: "It's a bad idea."

Republicans seem very caught off guard by this.
There are police here on the hill circling politicians when they come in for the vote, keeping reporters away from them. This is not normal.
An officer smashed right into NBC's Lee-Anne Caldwell who was walking with a senator. Another reporter, who is pregnant, says she was also shoved. Lots of yelling between reporters and cops here, who are clearly blocking reporters from getting near senators.

WHOA. Mitch McConnell announces Trump *will* sign the spending bill but is also going to declare a national emergency to build the wall.
Until now Senate Republicans had been urging Trump not to declare a state of emergency, which would vastly expand the precedent of presidents using this power. Republicans warned it will be held up in the courts through the end of this presidential term.
We're in uncharted waters here. Last week Democratic Senator Chris Murphy told me Republicans should be "very scared" by Trump vastly expanding presidential emergency powers. Here's what he said.

People who've spent two years shocked and outraged won't suddenly become Trump supporters if he suddenly stops insulting people and stops fascist-style chants.
