When I talk about climate with non-scientists (mostly lawyers to be) I sometimes start by saying that one way to think about the atmospheric conditions (where we live) is as the air space between a pot of heated water (the ocean) and the lid of the pot (the greenhouse effect).
What matters for that air (where we live) is how high the burners are (solar insolation), how hot the water is (because heat reservoir), and how tight the lid is (greenhouse effect). The water in the pot is clearly getting hotter.
