Much of testing in prod is the equivalent of checking in on your science experiment in the basement now and then.

Check the oxygen levels, poke the side, does it need more water? Does anything look weird?...unexpected?
there's a term for this in the medical field; i don't remember what it is or where I read it (probably Atul Gawande) -- the idea of examining a patient holistically, with a curious, questioning mind, before zooming in to the particular symptoms or complaints.
... and I just realized the piece was bemoaning that this skill was being lost, as doctors increasingly spend office visits with their attention on computers and charts and lists of symptoms, not patients.
