Much of testing in prod is the equivalent of checking in on your science experiment in the basement now and then.

Check the oxygen levels, poke the side, does it need more water? Does anything look weird?...unexpected?
there's a term for this in the medical field; i don't remember what it is or where I read it (probably Atul Gawande) -- the idea of examining a patient holistically, with a curious, questioning mind, before zooming in to the particular symptoms or complaints.
... and I just realized the piece was bemoaning that this skill was being lost, as doctors increasingly spend office visits with their attention on computers and charts and lists of symptoms, not patients.

A good question! Monitoring checks and unit tests perform exactly the same function: they regularly and automatedly check that the code or system is operating within "normal" bounds.

A laundry list of known unknowns, in other words.
So do we still need all these tests and checks, in a post-o11y world? The answer is yes...and no.

Yes, you still want to write tests and monitoring checks: to catch regressions, to catch or rule out all the dumb problems before you waste your precious curiosity on them.
But here's where tests and monitoring diverge. Tests don't (usually) wake you up when they fail, whereas the whole raison d'etre of monitoring is alerts, those every-alert-must-be-actionable fucking alerts.

So there's a cost to be borne. Is it worth it? 🤔

aw, christine dug up this old hn comment on the scuba whitepaper. <3 yep, scuba was exactly this transformative for us at parse, and that experience led straight to us starting honeycomb.
fun historical note: scuba was actually hacked together in order to claw their way out of mysql hell. that's where it got so many of its unique qualities -- arbitrarily wide events, high cardinality dimensions, etc. all the shit you gotta have for debugging db queries.
it was only after that they were like ... hey, this kinda works for other stuff too huh... 🤜🤛

it's so fascinating to me how out of left field that origin story is. explains why it shares so little DNA with the rest of the monitoring ecosystem, doesn't it?

You must read this entire thread by @isotopp, where he describes the kind of real time explorability, testing and experimenting in prod you can do with a mature event driven stack (at booking.com).
Do you have a production system architecture that sounds like this? We are both interested in evangelizing it more widely, and actively looking for co-conspirators. DMs are open.
Given how powerful these event systems are, it seems odd that there aren't more of them. Getting to experiment non destructively in real time seems like it should be a key business differentiator for lots and lots of tech companies.

That needs to stop. Twitter and other sites continue to fail us - it takes a lot for an account to be suspended. There was one account once that happily tweeted about all sorts of sexual activity and rape in relation to me, but was only suspended when they made racist comments 2/
about an MP. Those were vile and entirely unacceptable, but the account should have been suspended way before then. Likewise, I remember the Ukip account that plastered my face all over Twitter for months - never even got a warning for that and it was only closed much later. 3/
