-Rich folks hire undocumented workers on the cheap
-Rich folks fund the election of other rich folks
-Rich folks fund fake populism to make low paid people hate the workers hired on the cheap
-Rich folks "enforce the law" but they only hurt the people who were hired on the cheap
Trump saying "the system is rigged" is just words designed to make you think it's rigged by & for workers who got hired on the cheap. In fact, it's rigged by & for the people like the guy who runs Koch Foods and by & for ppl like Donald Trump.

A lot of y'all are getting duped.
Oh, and if Koch Foods decides to stop hiring undocumented workers on the cheap, they won't be going to coal or steel country to hire you guys who lost your gigs. They're going to go to automation. So kicking out those chicken factory workers gets you literally nothing. Well done.

After the Aurora theater shooting, it was hard to get our kids (who were much younger then) to go to the movies. They just didn't want to go, even though I explained that in New York, people couldn't walk around with those giant guns. Even today when we do go, we watch the doors.
Years before, in Florida, a federal agent got into a road rage incident with another man and they pulled into the parking lot of our local post office to argue. The man shot the agent, in front of the agent's teen daughter. The kids quit going with me to the post office.
Our kids grew up having to do those drills where we gamed out where to meet if there was a mass shooting at their school. They've had cellphones since age 12 so we could reach them just in case; and I memorized their daily school outfits-just in case-and we lived in the suburbs.

If you are brown or black in America at a time when the president of the United States - as a core feature of his presidency AND HIS CAMPAIGN - is acting as an accelerant to violent white nationalists, why can't your congressman tell you that your grocer (4ex) is funding that?
Wouldn't you want to know who in your community is paying for the ads that call you and anyone who looks like you or speaks like you an invader, an infestation and an animal? Aren't you allowed to know who is paying to re-elect the man taking & caging kids who look like yours?
Donations are a public, civic act.

Sad but true. We managed to come back after the Iraq invasion and occupation and torture and Gitmo w/ an historic election of a member of a long-beleaguered minority (something Europe hasn't done) who also repudiated that war. That THIS is the backlash will make recovery harder.
The Iraq war exposed the power, greed and cruelty of the military-industrial (and oil) complex that Eisenhower warned about, and that infects every western power. Trumpian backlash exposes that the U.S. is not immune from the neofascist, Putinite forces threatening the world.
And if we can fall so easily, and so quickly give up our status as "leader of the free world," and become the country that cages children and whose leader holds constant, screaming rallies denouncing immigrants and winking at violence and expulsion... well God help us all.

On Wednesday, Dianne received a call. It was her fiance, dialing her from a chicken plant in a nearby Miss. town. He told her ICE was there.

His voice trembling, he said: “Take care of my kids.”

Dianne’s fiance is father to three children, ages 13, 15, and 19, with his ex-wife who was also undocumented and worked at a separate food plant in the area.

Not long after Dianne’s phone call with her fiance she found out that the kids’ mother was also arrested.
Dianne, who requested her last name not be used for fear of consequences for her fiance, sped to the local school where she saw adults coming to pick up children whose parents had been arrested.Some weren’t able to retrieve kids bc they hadn’t been listed as authorized guardians.

NYT used a clickbait headline to imply Trump directly hired undocumented workers but then three paragraphs in notes that his staff, not him personally, may have helped undocumented bypass checks, gain employment; in any event, what outcome did they expect that story to provide?
2. So basically it appears that supervisors at Trump properties were providing undocumented workers sanctuary and an opportunity to make a living, which if it had happened at any other company would’ve been lauded by left-leaning writers, but here became fodder for mockery.
3. Were these Trump supervisors Democrats or Republicans? What role did their political beliefs played in them giving sanctuary to undocumented workers? Or was their decision purely a business calculation? NYT didn’t bother digging into the nuances.

Today is going to be heavy on education-related topics. This is a sexy topic these days not least because educational institutions generate a lot of data and house economists. #NBERday
However, I should note here that economics of education is *adjacent to* some of my actual expertise, not my area of greatest mastery. Thus, while I can discuss these papers somewhat, several of them (seem to) disagree, and I can't tell you who to believe for sure. #NBERday

A properly functioning guest worker program would reduce undocumented immigration & make it harder for companies to exploit their workers.

That last one is probably why we don’t have a functioning guest worker program.
See, right now an employer can hire undocumented workers and underpay & abuse them, safe in the knowledge that if their employees complain, the employer can just call ICE.

And because ICE is so brutal, the worker is less likely to complain.
But since we underpay pretty much 90% of the population, we continue to allow this abuse to “keep prices low.”
