Sad but true. We managed to come back after the Iraq invasion and occupation and torture and Gitmo w/ an historic election of a member of a long-beleaguered minority (something Europe hasn't done) who also repudiated that war. That THIS is the backlash will make recovery harder.
The Iraq war exposed the power, greed and cruelty of the military-industrial (and oil) complex that Eisenhower warned about, and that infects every western power. Trumpian backlash exposes that the U.S. is not immune from the neofascist, Putinite forces threatening the world.
And if we can fall so easily, and so quickly give up our status as "leader of the free world," and become the country that cages children and whose leader holds constant, screaming rallies denouncing immigrants and winking at violence and expulsion... well God help us all.
