Read this latest shakeup in US intel as a momentary relief for career intel officials. Joseph Maguire is not a career guy, but he’s not a novice. Running NCTC and being a former admiral = street cred. He’s also not (yet) the nominee for permanent DNI. washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
A lot of career people will read this as Sue Gordon getting a raw deal. A US official described her as “heartbroken.” No one wants to go out this way. But she went out praising her colleagues as apolitical pros. She’s implicitly rejecting the claims that the IC is anti-Trump.
Intel people I’ve talked to tonight are relieved that Trump didn’t pick a hack, aware that Maguire isn’t the formal nominee and things could change again. But all things considered, they think this isn’t a disaster.

Very informative thread, which concludes, as other experts have, that the image Trump tweeted was taken by a satellite called USA-224, reportedly operated by the National Reconnaissance Office, perhaps the most secretive of all intel agencies. Some points worth noting...
Bassa notes, "Now that this image has been published, with the orbit of the satellite known, will enable some estimates of the resolution of the Keyhole satellites." The US works hard to make sure that info is NOT publicly known. It's a basic reason these images are classified.
When the gov't does declassify images from satellites, if often modifies the image so that it doesn't give away the satellite resolution. That's another indication that the gov't takes seriously keeping these technical details secret.

Ratcliffe claims he arrested 300 immigrants in 1 day. He didn't. Only 45 workers were charged. Six cases were dismissed, two because the suspects turned out to be U.S. citizens. One was awakened in her home and hauled away by immigration agents. washingtonpost.com/investigations…
Ratcliffe trumpeted his apparently minimal role in the action to burnish his conservative bona fides when he ran for Congress. “At the end of the day, it did not deliver,” said a former investigator involved in early planning stages. “It was the biggest waste of money and hype.”
Leticia Zamarripa, a spokeswoman in ICE’s El Paso office who also participated in the operation, questioned Ratcliffe’s characterization of his role in the arrests. “No, that doesn’t sound factual. That sounds incorrect,” she told the Post.

Haspel has often joined DNI Dan Coats and a career senior intel official for Trump's intelligence briefing. They boil down a few key points that they think Trump absolutely needs to know. Haspel is careful not to contradict the president or argue with him about his opinions.
That's illustrative of how Haspel has managed her relationship with the president; which is to say, she has focused more on representing her agency and doing her job than cultivating a close relationship w/ Trump, as Mike Pompeo did when he ran the CIA.

Zarif’s designation was the most recent in a long list of sanctions in the US’s “maximum pressure” campaign.
According to Rouhani, the US started the campaign after the nationwide 2018 protests in almost all of Iran’s provinces.
Protesters chanted “down with Khamenei” and denounced both factions of the regime. They called for the downfall of the regime in its entirety chanting “reformers, hardliners, the game is over”.
It was then that the world realized the regime’s days were numbered.
