A few notes about the Mississippi ICE raids. I'm in Memphis and have colleagues who are removal specialists (I'm on the visa side of the practice). But I know about things generally. I mention this because Memphis is one of the courts that will be dealing with those arrested. 1
The other court is in New Orleans. Basically, those arrested north of Jackson go to Memphis and south of Jackson go to New Orleans. 2
If an arrested immigrant is released from detention, they’ll go to one of these courts. If they remain detained, they’ll go to the immigration court servicing the detention facility. @LilySAxelrod - please correct as needed. 3
@LilySAxelrod Earlier today, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger was reporting 300 of the 680 arrested had been released from detention so they’ll likely be going to Memphis or New Orleans. clarionledger.com/story/news/201…
@LilySAxelrod The raids were in the towns of Morton, Carthage, Pelahatchie, Bay Springs, Walnut Grove, and Canton which are all in central Mississippi. It looks like most of the towns are just north of I-20 which is the highway going through Jackson. 5
@LilySAxelrod So I’m presuming the Memphis court will get the bulk of the cases. (Readers - please correct me if they know otherwise). 6
@LilySAxelrod I promised earlier I would list the names of some of the organizations helping those arrested find legal help. There are organizations in Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana. 7
@LilySAxelrod One place I would consider starting with is the Mississippi Center for Justice - mscenterforjustice.org. 8
@LilySAxelrod I know a number of lawyers from the Midsouth Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association @ailanational (coverng the whole region - TN, LA, MS, AR and KY), have signed up on MCJ’s volunteer lawyer list & I think they’re the only ones putting such a list together. 9
@LilySAxelrod @AILANational Another organization that does a lot of good work helping Mississippi immigrants is MIRA - the Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance. yourmira.wpcomstaging.com. Not sure they help with court, but they presumably can refer. 10
@LilySAxelrod @AILANational In Tennessee, the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) does important advocacy work. I don’t believe they are providing direct legal services, but can connect people. tnimmigrant.org 11
@LilySAxelrod @AILANational In Memphis, Latino Memphis is a non-profit providing legal assistance. They’re at latinomemphis.org 12
@LilySAxelrod @AILANational The Memphis non-profit law firm Mid-South Immigration Advocates provides free and low-cost legal services. They’re at miamemphis.org 13
@LilySAxelrod @AILANational I understand most of the arrested immigrants are women and have been taken to the detention center in Jena, LA. I’m the told Southern Poverty Law Ctr has an office nearby that may be helping. Not sure. I've heard there's another group there as well. If you know, please advise. 14
@LilySAxelrod @AILANational I’d also go to immigrationadvocates.org/nonprofit/lega… which has a list of organizations in Louisiana providing free and low cost immigration legal services in Louisiana.15
@LilySAxelrod @AILANational @ailanational maintains a lawyer referral service on its web site at ailalawyer.com. This NOT a pro bono list, but a useful place to find immigration lawyers in almost any location around the country. 16
@LilySAxelrod @AILANational I’m sure others can list in the replies worthy organizations in the region that are providing legal help as well as broader assistance to immigrants. Also, if I misstated anything, feel free to correct. Hope this was helpful. <end of thread> 17
