If you feel you are being severely underpaid, there’s a playbook to follow.

:: T H R E A D ::
1/ Do your research: Arm yourself with data by asking coworkers/friends for their comp & levels. Make a friend in HR to get more perspective. Research what you’d make at other companies.

Goal is to understand how others value your role/experience, and to know your worth.
2/ Get advice: Speak with a senior sponsor/mentor for advice on how to navigate the nuances of your situation, given your position within the org, relationship with your manager/leaders, etc.
3/ Be prepared: Write up a script for your conversation with your manager.

Think of every question/comeback they may have for you. Practice your responses with a friend, or in the mirror.

Be confident and firm - preparation helps you do that.
4/ Talk to your manager: Tell your boss you’ve done extensive research, you are being severely underpaid, and this knowledge is negatively impacting your wellbeing.

Be prepared to tell her/him what you are worth, and ask if they can help you make this right.
5/ Explore other opportunities: If your manager doesn’t respond well, start considering other companies.

Don’t tell them that you are underpaid, tell them what you are worth.
6/ Last chance: When you have other offers, give your company one final opportunity to make things right.

If they don’t see your worth, it’s time to go. Plain and simple!
I hope this helps someone.
