Many (including @pmdfoster) have commented on the fact that it offers nothing new - 'trust us to find alternative arrangements to 'solve' the backstop issue' is not much of a pitch. 2/
My point here is that Johnson's stated aspiration, while not new, is somewhere between unrealistic and impossible. 3/
He wants no hard border in Ireland, and, at the same time, the freedom for the UK (including Northern Ireland) to diverge from EU single market rules. 4/
Any Brexit requires the making of hard choices. Choices which Johnson, like May before him, is not willing to acknowledge and to make. So... round and round we go. 6/6
