Short thread on Comey & the Justice Department Inspector General’s report. There’s a right way and a wrong way to cover this. The wrong way is by a quick reach for analogy — “nyah, nyah, nyah, this is just like what Comey did to Hillary Clinton” — as @GrahamDavidA does here.
The right way is what @benjaminwittes does at @lawfareblog: reading the IG report & zeroing in on the main fault it found with Comey: he disclosed publicly that the President had sought to obstruct an FBI investigation of Gen. Flynn.
Obviously, this enraged Trump. He has said so, often. Comey has been one of his special targets in public statements. Did this influence DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz — who found nothing to charge Comey with, but may have felt he had give the President something?
This strikes me as a significant question. Trump has tried to use his position as President to protect himself from the beginning; some officials have resisted his threats or suggestions, & others have sought to appease him. Was the IG report written with that context in mind?
