Thread. @emorwee, who left @newrepublic to start a climate newsletter, has some thoughts. This one jumped out at me. “Big Green” groups, & some smaller ones too, do some valuable work. They also devote an enormous amount of time & attention to just keeping the wheels turning.
I don’t mean institutional maintenance. I mean institutional maintenance as an end in itself. A big part of that is endless repetition by green groups of how great and innovative and transformative they are. As a fundraising tactic, this big talk appears to work pretty well.
Does it contribute to better environmental outcomes, or policies, or policy implementation? Not that much, I don’t think. Business school buzzwords & continual self-praise contribute more to activity than to progress in the environmental field. @emorwee’s point is well taken.
