Stumbled upon this snippet from a 1970 campaign speech by Spiro Agnew, Nixon's VP. Holy Southern Strategy, Batman!
Agnew notes that the Democrats won't come down to Georgia to campaign because they know how much they're disliked down there. "They know that the steps they’ve taken to reduce the South to a disinvolved citizenship within the national picture are not well received in Georgia."
He then notes that the Dems' "votes against Clement Haysworth & Harrold Carswell are not well received in the South.” Haysworth and Carswell were southerners nominated to the SCOTUS by Nixon, but who were rejected (in part) because of their history of pro-segregationist rulings.
But according to Agnew, the Dems didn't like those two judges because they were “strict construction, Southern judges," a euphemism if ever there was one.
The clip ends with Agnew attacking radical college students who he says are protesting irresponsibly. “Demonstrations in the street of this country are not the way of this country.”
