This podcast conversation with Bill Weld made me think that the GOP primary might be more deserving of attention than I had previously assumed. Two reasons... podcast.thebulwark.com/bill-weld-on-t…
First, Weld is working hard in NH and, by his own account (granted), is meeting with a fairly positive response. With him, Joe Walsh, Sanford, and maybe Kasich all on the ballot...and with independents and Dems eligible to vote in the R primary, it could get interesting.
What happens, for example, if Trump wins the NH GOP primary with something like 70% of the vote, or even less? Aside from driving him bonkers, might that not be seen as a sign of great weakness at the top of the ticket?
Second reason to keep an eye on the GOP primary (which I had not considered before listening to this conversation) is the possibility of GOP debates. Imagine a scenario in which Weld, Kasich, Walsh, and Sanford occupy a GOP debate stage on CNN w/ an empty chair for Trump.
Imagine if millions tune in to watch those four explain to their fellow Republicans why Trump is toxic for the party. It gives permission to rank and file GOPers to occupy that space of "Republican, but not pro-Trump," and throws a few stones on the tracks of the Trump Train.
You know Trump would watch those debates and, despite the advice he'd get, could not resist whining about it on Twitter. Much of Trump's support is 100% on board, but there's definitely a portion that's softer, more ambivalent. Losing those folks would doom his 2020 chances.
One last interesting take away from that podcast. Bill Weld speaks more directly and forcefully about impeachment than most people in leadership positions in the Democratic party. To his mind, beginning impeachment proceedings seems like a no-brainer.
