There's so much wrong with the Stepens column, but this is worth flagging. Stalin's committed many crimes in Poland (most notoriously the Katyn massacre). But to say Stalin's invasion was "no less murderous" than Hitler's is to engage in a very dangerous form of mythmaking.
I really want to move on beyond Stephens but that comment about Polish history is wrong & odious. It'll be interesting to see if the Times lets it stand or issues a correction.
So: here's what we have to watch for: will the NY Times stand by Stephens claim that Stalin's invasion of Poland was "no less murderous" than Hitler's or will they acknowledge that it is 1) false 2) echoes "both-sides" attempts to exonerate Nazism.
