@Me4Trauma Another great question. Starts with a mindset. For surgeons in uniform, no matter how subspecialized you are, you will be called upon to deploy and be a facile trauma surgeon #Q5 #SoMe4Trauma #SoMe4Surgery
@Me4Trauma First step was alluded to in #Q4. Training must be high quality but brief. To that end, the Emergency War Surgery course has undergone significant revision in recent years. Still work to do there though #Q5 #SoMe4Trauma #SoMe4Surgery
@Me4Trauma EWS has partnered with @AmCollSurgeons @ACSTrauma and incorporated the ASSET course into the curriculum. Vascular exposure is possibly the most important refresher prior to deployment #Q5 #SoMe4Trauma #SoMe4Surgery
@Me4Trauma @AmCollSurgeons @ACSTrauma I think ATOM should also be incorporated rather than a porcine model without rigid curriculum. By partnering with @ACSTrauma we can access existing, validated models with excellent audiovisual adjuncts #Q5 #SoMe4Trauma #SoMe4Surgery
@Me4Trauma @AmCollSurgeons @ACSTrauma As we showed in this 2010 study looking at deployed surgery vs cases from graduating Chief residents, we also showed a need for exposure to damage control ortho and neurosurgeon for general surgeons ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/20869… #Q5 #SoMe4Trauma #SoMe4Surgery
@Me4Trauma @AmCollSurgeons @ACSTrauma I’d also add the need for exposure to c-section and emergent GYN procedures. The rural surgery model may be quite helpful here ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/20869…
@Me4Trauma @AmCollSurgeons @ACSTrauma And while vascular exposure ASSET course is fantastic, I think there would also be added benefit to some shunt, patch repair, and vascular anastomosis work in the lab prior to deployment. I know Mark Bowyer and Todd Rasmussen are exploring this #Q5 #SoMe4Trauma #SoMe4Surgery
