Reminder: Lebanon is not much of a state if it can’t stop an Iranian proxy from using its territory to attack another country.
Even harder to respect Lebanese sovereignty when the actual government is controlled in part by Iran’s proxy, the armed forces collaborate with Iran’s proxy, and large chunks of territory in the country is controlled by Iran’s proxy.
Let’s also not forget that the Lebanese financial sector is also infested with illicit finance from Iran’s proxy. 2 banks hit with Treasury actions over 8 years. More actions would be taken if USG officials weren’t petrified of collapsing whatever is left or the state.
Sure, there are many voices that stand against Hezbollah. Unfortunately, they are ineffectual and beset with fear (understandably). Just because those voices exist doesn’t mean that Iran hasn’t taken effective control over much of the country through its proxy.
In short, Iran is holding Lebanon hostage by proxy. It has been for three decades. The USG pretends that by working with the “moderates” we can somehow overcome. But it’s not going anywhere. Today was just a taste of what Iran will bring the region through its proxy in Lebanon.
