Floridians awoke Labor Day to find that Hurricane Dorian had yet to turn north away from the coast as expected, instead stalling to an agonizing crawl while continuing to pound the Bahamas with winds of 165 miles per hour. miamiherald.com/news/weather/h…
“It is still possible for the hurricane to deviate from this forecast, and move very near or over the coast,” the hurricane center wrote. “Users are reminded not to focus on the exact forecast track.”
Bahamians woke up Monday to 165 mph winds, life-threatening rains and 15 to 23 feet storm surges that left homes and roads under water from Grand Bahama to New Providence.
The slow-moving storm’s span is so wide that residents in Eleuthera, Cat Island, the Berry Islands and Andros also were feeling its catastrophic effects. miamiherald.com/news/weather/h…

Yep, I’m alive. Made it to Nassau. #Hurricane #DORIAN: By far the most intense cyclone I’ve witnessed in 28 years of chasing. Thought I was playing it safe by riding it out in a solid-concrete school on a hill in Marsh Harbour. Thought wrong.
Winds pounded the building with the force of a thousand sledgehammers. Crept out during eye to find school mostly destroyed, cars in parking lot thrown around & mutilated. Barometer said 913.4 mb.
Frantically piled into few functioning cars (one of them mine) & relocated to government complex before backside struck. Building filled with terrorized refugees, many who had swam to safety or abandoned collapsed houses. The calm eye saved lives—gave victims chance to relocate.

Now that everyone is back at work, the conversation about Hurricane #Dorian and climate change will begin in earnest. That's fine as long as you stick to sound science.

So, what is the current "consensus" among hurricane scientists?

(1) It's important to point out that this 2019.

It is not the year 2100 and you should not take climate model output from 80-years in the future as the proof of a "signal" you are seeing today.

The changes in the 22nd Century are a long ways off.
(2) We have a long historical record -- going back to 1851 -- with, of course, decreasing certainty in hurricane data.

However, since the 1940s we have aircraft recon and then satellites came along in the past 50-years.

We also have good records of U.S. landfalls.

Dorian was upgraded to Category 5 status on 8 a.m. advisory Sunday. The storm is showing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. Dorian made a very slight shift west overnight.

Zoomed in look at #HurricaneDorian eye... there is a smaller inner eye, and a larger outer eye. Dorian is over very warm waters with MINIMAL wind shear, which means its likely Dorian will strengthen considerably.
