@bbclaurak & @Peston are no longer journalists in any real sense

They're simply billboards, being fed #Brexit distractions, dead cats & fake lines which they dutifully broadcast on demand

It's not real just because Cummings gave the line
The whole "briefing" thing is a nonsense now, they're not being fed the inside track, this is not a "scoop" or "journalistic tenaciousness"

It's a parody, a mechanism for disseminating the latest bait & switch from government, who know it will be reproduced without question
We could save license payers a lot of money if the BBC just gave the government use of a whiteboard twice a day on national telly

1) We'd be able to cut through all this nonsense if TV interviewers asked the following:

If no deal is something we can easily cope with, then how can it *also* be so terrifying that 27 countries will capitulate and give us a deal?
2) or, if the EU27 are really terrified of no deal, why shouldn't we be terrified of no deal, and what right does anyone have to gamble the country's future on something so dangerous?
3) The reality is Brexit supporters are engaged in a massive doublethink, a childish worldview easily challenged but our media fails to challenge it.

TV audiences grown when they hear "project fear" projections, yet believe those same figures on the EU27 side will force a deal

1) Just a recap for #brexit supporters

Parliament, that's our sovereign parliament we voted in in 2017 after the referendum & which therefore represents "the will of the people", is being shut down by Cummings, an "unelected bureaucrat" who is also threatening MPs with the sack
2) someone held in contempt of parliament now has more control over parliament than any elected MP

Do you even know what you are actually fighting for anymore when you support #brexit? Because literally everything you said this was about, you've trashed

1) the fate of the country on #Brexit relies on one man doing the right thing

What this informed article tells us is that the sure fire way of stopping no deal is a specific vote of no confidence followed by an alternative government within 14 days

2) not to be overdramatic but all other routes are risky and could be blocked. But constitutionally the primary defence against a rogue government remains in place, vote no confidence, bring Johnson down, form a new government around an alternative PM and pass legislation
3) So there is only one actual blocker - Corbyn. Either insufficient MPs believe he can command the confidence of the house or insufficient (Tory mostly but not exclusively) would support him.

But if he is forced out, insufficient left Labour MPs would support anyone else

Senior Tory rebels have been in to see Johnson and have basically come back out describing the meeting as being crap, and the Johnson is still sticking to the claim that the whip will be withdrawn from any Tory MP that votes against the government

All the current rumblings from Labour still seem to indicate that they won't back a vote calling for a General Election unless legislation is in place to stop a No Deal Brexit on 31 October, but that's still a case of wait and see

Perhaps unsurprising therefore - given @BorisJohnson red lines on removing backstop, while dismissing time-limits, exit mechanisms or the “dedramatised” NI-only backstop the EU suggested, that Barnier is “not optimistic” about avoiding ‘no deal’. /2

1. There was only ever one coherent reason to remain in the EU and that was to stop it becoming the monster it very obviously wants to become. For a time that was a valid basis for being in the EU, but in many respects it didn't work because it went ahead with fiscal union anyway
2. What the UK proved is that we could, to a point, control the pace, but not the destination, and when the EU goes ahead with something, even without us, being in its gravitational orbit we tend to get sucked along with it. To a point that much won't change even after Brexit.
3. We really dodged the bullet by not joining the Euro which would have been a catastrophe for the UK but now the Euro is established, the functioning of the EU and the running of it is increasingly none of our business. We're not in the fast lane of the EU and we dont need to be

I talked to business lobby groups, Stephen Kelly from @ManufacturingNI fresh back from talks with Barnier. And bosses of big companies.

- all-UK in a temporary customs Union
- Northern Ireland only in Single Market for goods, via devolution
- no checks GB-NI

1/ Very small thread on why many people (including me) have been getting #Brexit wrong. We've been blinded by the theatre & complex issues of the "EU negotiations" - but in fact its much simpler than that....indeed.....
2/ #Brexit "EU negotiations" are not in any significant way actually taking place, & to the extent that that they are at a minor level even these are largely irrelevant. Once I grasped this everything else of the last 12 months made sense.....
3/ The political establishment whether Corbyn's Labour or May's Conservatives (& indeed much of the political media) are, contrary to the breathless reporting of BBC etc, largely unconcerned with the concrete nature of the EU process (not negotiations) of #Brexit. For 2 reasons..
