It would be odd, to say the least, for Johnson’s opponents to have spent two months lambasting him as an unelected prime minister, accusing him of launching a coup and then when he asks for for an election, refusing to grant it.
There are plenty of MPs who are rejecting an election completely and just trying to secure another extension and see what happens when we get there. Johnson is right about something: extensions like that are becoming increasingly futile.
If an election is guaranteed on October 14th and legislature cannot tolerate govt policy (and won’t replace it with another) it would be constitutionally proper to have an election.
What the legislature can’t and shouldn’t do is have its cake and eat it by keeping a lifeless govt in place, making it impotent and then take its functions unto itself.
Given potential parliamentary arithmetic after the next election, If I were Corbyn I’d be pretty worried about these developments.
Basically- this parliament isn’t viable. It’s too finely balanced to resolve Brexit. Most MPs will tell you that privately. It’s got to go, it’s just a case of when it’s put out of its misery .
