What if the prosaic explanation is the right one?

Trump and his advisers know he's failing on multiple fronts, and they know he's at serious risk of losing reelection as a result.

There's no trick up his sleeve, no matter how hard we look.

Here's something worth mulling: Even if Trump gets a deal with China, all of his erratic moves might not quell the sense of uncertainty that has caused manufacturing to contract.

As one expert notes, in this scenario, the damage has already been done:

Because we all got it so wrong in 2016, we're understandably reluctant to point out the obvious: Trump fears he's losing, and he's acting out wildly over it.

But this isn't 2016 anymore. Trump has a record of serious failure to defend.

Trump doctored a weather chart and ordered a rear admiral to release a statement backing up his falsehoods.

The NOAA also jumped to Trump's defense, and the White House won't say if they engineered it.

By my count, something like this has happened at least 7 times.

All of your criticisms of Bret Stephens are nothing but positive from the point of view of his editors, who will take it as a sign that he gets "talked about" and is "provocative" and knows how to "push people's buttons."

It's a waste of time. You're only helping the guy.
Some have pointed out that this is too harsh. Fair enough.

Let me qualify. I was being glib for effect. I think this is a problem throughout the industry: Too often criticism isn't weighed on merits and is instead taken as a sign of drawing attention and therefore success.
