Trump’s lie about Alabama getting hit in almost all models of hurricane Dorian is like his lie about inauguration crowd size.
So easy to prove false, but he keeps lying. So easy to let it go, but he won’t.
These are not normal lies of a politician. It’s a bigger assault on truth.
Easy to dismiss Trump's seemingly unimportant lies. He lies so much, why bother with those?
But the easily disproved lies about silly things are, in a way, the most important of all.
They're so unnecessary. Not covering up scandal. Not spinning policy failure. Just lying.
Can speculate about why Trump lies about unimportant things—fragile ego, anti-media strategy, pathology—but it doesn’t matter as much as actions

-lying
-holding on to the lie even after it’s unambiguously proven false
-getting others to join in the lie

That last one’s important
Trump has gov officials and media orgs selling lies all the time. You have to believe them, or at least pretend you do, to be a Republican in good standing.
Getting others to join the silly, easily disproved lies hardens the Trumpist information bubble. An alternative reality.
Trump’s obvious lies about unimportant things create a loyalty test: do you value Donald Trump more than truth?
It’s not just another politician lying (albeit more). It’s bigger. An assault on truth itself.
And without basic truth, we can’t really discuss anything important
