Hey new Twitter followers, I know a lot of you are here because of this thread. Pretty wild, right? Turns out that Rightwing Outrage Mobs have been targeting liberal profs for years now. Shocking.

But here's the thing: The Left does it too.

I have another list, one of just conservative faculty and deans who've been terminated because of protected political speech. It's not as long as the liberal list, but it's still plenty long. And besides, there are far fewer conservative faculty to begin with.

For instance...
Laura Corvino, an adjunct who was fired just a few months back by Emory. Granted, she said some disgusting, reprehensible things -- but plenty of the folks on the other list said disgusting things too.

Popular categories of speech apt to get a conservative prof fired are homophobic speech, Islamophobic speech, and anti-black speech. Examples:

Both sides do it, and are doing it right now. My point today has not been that the Right is worse, or that the Right did it first, or anything like that. Because a) how would you prove it?; and b) who cares?

My point is that both sides are responsible.
It frustrates me to no end to watch folks on the Right claim that the Left is uniquely to blame for Cancel Culture. That requires a massive act of selective forgetting, one we shouldn't let them get away with.

But again: both sides. Sorry, but it's the boring truth.

Sigh. Look, *clearly* I think that the rightwing speech on this list is worse than the leftwing speech. That's not even a question for me. But the only way this list hangs together is if it adopts a neutral stance toward all protected speech. That's it.

But if what you need is partisanship, here ya go. The Republican Party is far, far worse than the Democratic Party when it comes to campus free speech. There's no "both sides" there.

New from me: Last June, the Canadian government adopted a new definition of anti-Semitism to better identify and combat bigotry. Unfortunately, that definition poses a potentially serious threat to campus free speech.

Simply put, the new definition explicitly equates anti-Semitism with certain kinds of speech critical of Israel. Supporters insist that this is a harmless innovation, one meant purely to educate and aid in gathering data.

We have good reason to doubt them.
Supporters said the same thing when the US State Department adopted this definition a while back. Then, in 2017, the Department of Education began applying it domestically. The result has been a host of lawsuits and federal investigations over anti-Israeli speech on campus.

Fear of anti-conservative bias in faculty grading is a major part of the Right’s critique of higher ed. It is also something that a lot of students are convinced takes place, to their detriment as learners. Evidence that this fear is misplaced ought to be a cause for celebration!
Also: conservatives have insisted for years that they are the victims of rampant partisan grading. Surveys from FIRE, Heterodox, and College Pulse all show this. If the evidence indicates that this fear is misplaced, maybe that should affect how we view other fears by cons.

I see this a lot. It's the last resort of the people who, when presented with evidence that liberal faculty do get fired for their speech, still want to insist conservatives are the "real" victims. The thing is, conservative profs get away with horrific speech all the time.
Like Mitchell Langbert (CUNY), who argued last year that sexual assault is a male right of passage, and that any man who hasn't assaulted a woman has no place in public office. He later said that he wasn't serious, but I suspect Klinzman wasn't either.

Or Jason Hill (DePaul), who made the case for ethnic cleansing of Palestinians earlier this summer. He, like Langbert, still have their jobs, by the way.

#Thread Ever since visiting Beallsville and my partner's Civil War ancestor's grave, I've been pondering what *my* family has lost, in known history, because of the Genocide.
My partner has taken me to many, many cemeteries around western PA, some of them dating to the 18th century, and been able to point them out as ancestors.

That's kind of incredible, to me.
The top of this thread has a picture of the restored interior of the St. Giragos church of Diyarbakir, in Turkey. My Bakkalian ancestors helped build that church. But past my great-grandfather's generation, I can't tell you what their names were, or where they're buried.

Denying or downplaying the #Holocaust is not new. It has been a recurring theme by AJ arabic since its establishment. 1/
AJ has continued to recycle myth that number of #Holocaust victims is debatable, deny extermination & has accused Zionist movement of benefiting from it.
