Yes, I saw Trump’s absurd series of tweets regarding criminal justice change. Ironically, they deserve more of a response than he deserves or could ever give. For starters: It’s disgusting how Trump always, always attacks Black men by name and criticizes women like he’s in 1950.
As for the rest, I imagine there will be much more to say. Suffice it to say, the First Step Act is literally a First Step. It is not “Criminal Justice Reform.” And Obama wanted it passed — with GOP support — but McConnell was unwilling to hold a vote.
And on the other end of the spectrum, outside of the First Step Act, Trump and his Justice Department are trying their damnedest to do all they can do to stymie, malign, halt, or reverse other criminal legal system reform efforts.
Also, to remind folks of what a lie Trump’s whole thread is: Remember that he named Jeff Sessions to be AG! It wasn’t until Sessions was gone that the First Step Act moved. Meanwhile, back in 2017, @johnlegend and others were actually at work: buzzfeednews.com/article/chrisg…
Sessions’ efforts to reverse or roll back Obama-era charging policies and police reviews and Barr’s efforts to attack local prosecutors seeking to reform the system and his move to re-start federal executions belie any claim the Trump admin is pro-criminal justice reform.
If you want to see what dismantling mass incarceration looks like, it’s a lot of work. It’s also not what Trump is doing. Rather, check out CA Sen. @Scott_Wiener’s #SB136, set to be voted on in the Assembly on Monday, for an example. Thread:
Following my thread from last night about Trump’s ridiculous criminal justice tweetstorm, I also see that @Sifill_LDF went at it this morning with a helluva thread. Read it all:
