“Alec” was persecuted as a leader in the Honduran evangelical church

He fled to the US to request asylum

Under a new policy, he had to “Remain in Mexico” for 6 months

A US judge granted him asylum

The same US government has reduced the number of Iraqi, Syrian, Iranian, Pakistani and Burmese Christians allowed to the US as refugees from 11,424 in fiscal year 2016 to 2,043 last year, down 80+% in just 2 years
Tomorrow, key administration leaders are meeting to discuss lowering the refugee ceiling further, potentially down to zero, meaning no persecuted Christians would be allowed to the US as refugees.

But apparently we’re free to say “Merry Christmas” now. So there’s that.
Forgive my cynicism, but I’m genuinely praying the US church will speak up, loudly and before it’s too late, to stand with our brothers and sisters persecuted for their faith in Jesus—& for others persecuted for other reasons

I've recently been asked: what share of asylum-seekers at the border have legitimate cases?

That's not the same question as "what percentage will ultimately be granted asylum?" because a major factor is the subjective decisions of distinct human beings

Which is why this matters
While US law is the same for every judge considering an asylum case, the law itself is sufficiently ambiguous that reasonable people can come to different conclusions with the same fact pattern

What is "persecution"? When is fear "well-founded"? What is a "social group"?
It's long been true that there are at least 3 factors likely to govern if you win an asylum case:

1) The strength of the evidence of the merits of your case
2) If you have legal representation (& how competent they are)
3) Who is adjudicating the case

Here’s the thing: most immigrants do “stand on their own two feet.”

Since 1996, most immigrants are already ineligible for most means-tested public benefits. They already rely on government help at rates much lower than comparable US citizens cato.org/publications/i…
Immigrants are here to work. Their labor participation rate (the share of adults who are employed) is significantly higher than among native-born US citizens, and their unemployment rate (the share of those looking for work who can’t find it) is lower bls.gov/news.release/f…
That includes immigrants coming from conditions of poverty in a home country and those being sponsored by a US citizen spouse who is working but whose income is just above the poverty line (not 250% of that line, the standard that would put them in the clear under the new rule)

In every office, the phone was ringing off the hook [thread]

I could only hear one side of the conversations, the receptionist (usually a college-aged intern or young staffer) explaining to a passionate constituent:

"Oh no, he's absolutely against taking kids from their moms"

"The Congresswoman is firmly opposed to separating families"
The same conversations in both Republican and Democratic offices. This was the Administration's policy, not Congress'. But people reached out to their Members of Congress, including a lot of upset Christians, & apparently they got the message to the White House

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).

remember when my roommates would call “house meetings” and then spend an hour telling me what i was doing wrong as a christian and friend and person and then, when i would start to cry, tell me “we can feel the rejection you feel and you should only be feeling loved by this”
remember when they told me i was a bad friend because i began isolating myself, avoiding them as much as possible, and becoming very private about my life and feelings
