The plot thickens. Texas AG Ken Paxton asked the state comptroller to block wrongful conviction compensation for Alfred Dewayne Brown, an exonerated death row prisoner. A special prosecutor and judge already determined that Dewayne is actually innocent. houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…
AG Paxton told the comptroller that there is still evidence that Dewayne Brown is guilty but never shared any evidence. Harris County DA Kim Ogg said that Paxton "inserted himself into a case where he has no jurisdiction" and that Paxton's actions are "improper."
As the Houston Chronicle notes, AG Paxton is under indictment himself for felony securities fraud.
Dewayne Brown spent 10 years on death row for a crime he didn’t commit. He was exonerated after an investigator found phone records in his own garage that confirmed Dewayne’s alibi. The prosecutor got an email about these phone records before the trial and did not disclose them.
Dewayne Brown is entitled to nearly $2 million in state compensation for his wrongful conviction. No amount of money could ever make this right, but it would be a step in the right direction and help Dewayne rebuild his life.
