1) September 11. 2001

A day that will forever stay with me.

And with all of us.

2) I was driving into work when I heard that a small plane had hit the World Trade Center

This was on the West Coast. It was still dark.

It would also get much worse.

3) I walked into the lobby of my firm five minutes later. After talking with our security folks I made my way up to the trading floor.

It was the quietest that I had ever seen.

4) We already knew this was bad but, suddenly, the second plane hit.

Everyone immediately picked up their phones and called their counterparts in New York.

5) I was blessed in that everyone I personally interacted with on a daily basis was safe.

But others on my trading desk - and their friends and counterparts in New York - were less so.

6) For the next two weeks, our trading activities were scattered at best.

Funerals were not only a daily occurrence in New York, they happened throughout the day.

7) On the first day that flights resumed my partner and I were on a plane to New York to visit clients.

I’ve never been unnerved by flying. I was that day.

8) One of our clients was in a building just adjacent to the Twin Towers. We looked down from his office at what was a still smoldering hole.

I’ve never seen tractors look so small.

9) Life changed that day. Not just for me, but for our country.

I was graced in that I was not directly touched. But I knew so many who were.
