I was a newly minted father, the staff of the hospital couldn’t stop talking about what was going on, sitting there stunned we turned off the TVs, asked the nurses not to talk about it, and focused on our new beautiful child.

Going to attempt to lay out what happened. A couple weeks ago, my wife, our three kids - 12, 14, and 16, and her mom left home from NC to go see Niagara Falls. I stayed behind because we run a tiny business out of our home and the show must go on.
Upon arriving at the campground, our oldest got out of the car and promptly collapsed in front of the cabin. They rushed him to the hospital. His condition deteriorated rapidly and they sent him to a children's hospital in Buffalo.
This was at about 10pm. I jumped in the car and drove non-stop to New York. I don't recommend doing this, by the way. I got there in time to see him admitted to the ICU. Within minutes of being wheeled into the room, they had him intubated.

Staff at Christchurch hospital are explaining what happened on the afternoon of the Mosque attacks. Senior staff were in a meeting and called out when the emergency department activated its major incident protocols - that means 5 or more patients from one incident. @MsKateLyons
Nursing clinical manager Tracey Williams said they had 48 admissions within an hour. Within 2.5 hours, she says "most patients were where they needed to be."

Earlier, hospital staff said no one died once they reached the emergency department.
The police cordon made it slightly difficult for some on the afternoon shift to get through, but Williams said the hospital was able to cope because the shooting was on a weekday and at a crossover between morning and afternoon shift - a lot of staff around.

yup. I once was working for the government and it was going to take up to a year and several hundred dollars to use IrfanView, a free program, because the donation would need to be a cheque, which means it'd have to be in the next year's budget. even for 25$
and we weren't allowed to use the program until we donated, because apparently the usage policies for free software & the federal government was that if they were free and donations were encouraged, we could use them freely, but if they suggested an amount, we had to pay it.
we needed irfanview because we had a subcontractor that had digitized 50 million pages for us and some of them were in a weird TIFF subformat.
See, it's Microsoft's fault...

Last night, Katie Arrington and her friend were traveling to Hilton Head, where Katie was scheduled to receive an award from a state medical organization this morning.
Katie was the passenger in the car traveling southbound on Highway 17, when a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction - northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 17 - struck the vehicle containing Katie and her friend.
Katie sustained a fracture in her back and several broken ribs, as well as injuries that required Katie to undergo major surgery including the removal of a portion of her small intestine and a portion of her colon.
