tonight is the last meeting of the cale elementary school renaming committee. i’ve only been to one other of these meetings and it was... not great!

at the last meeting, we heard from lots of relatives of the late paul cale. they all sang his praises and vehemently denied he was in any way racist.

one former albemarle county student, who attended an all black school prior to integration, spoke about cale denying her the right to attend latin classes (not offered in the black school) at the white school. he later denied her a job.

another woman spoke of a visit paul cale made to her (segregated) school and recalled how he referred to the students in a way that hurt her.
i expect we’ll hear a lot more like this tonight

the meeting is starting!
oh my god they started with their decision. the committee is recommending that the name be changed!!!!!!
superintendent matt haas will take the committee’s recommendation under advisement and will make his recommendation to the school board at the september 26th albemarle county school board meeting. meeting... adjourned.
the crowd of old white people sang the praises of paul cale at the last meeting are incensed. one of cale’s relatives just shouted at dr haas as he left, saying “you could at least have the courage to shake my hand!” which he seems happy to do.
one woman exclaimed, “UNBELIEVABLE! we can have statues to traitors, which we can’t remove, but we can rename a school.” another woman loudly proclaims that she is going to write SOME LETTERS!!
i’m not even mad i drove here for a 5 minute meeting. i’m so surprised and relieved that this wasn’t another marathon of listening to shitty old people talk about an even shittier dead person.
i guess now i have plenty of time to go home and write about the whole day i spent doing just that - listening to old people whine about how people aren’t being respectful enough of their favorite dead racist.
🥰 just sitting here in the auditorium soaking in the shocked indignation of all these horrible old people who didn’t get their way 🥰
i started to leave but now i’m standing listening to a bunch of very sad old people who have accosted one of the committee members.
the friends and family of dr cale keep saying “you didn’t listen to the people!”
the committee member rightly points out that the decision wasn’t based solely on the input of the people who showed up to speak.
oh my god these people are so close to getting it. this guy is saying by the logic we should have to change the name of everything named after a person - saying charlottesville itself is named after an imperialist queen.
lmao yes this bitter old man just suggested to another bitter old man that they should go out and tear down every sign that’s named after anybody. alright dude let’s do it.
“this hurts my heart,” says a white woman who attended albemarle county schools from 1965-1970. (albemarle county schools were finally integrated in 1963)
ok i don’t think i can keep listening to this man complain about a dead guy being called a racist.
for reference, this is what they’re saying isn’t racist

ok seriously, enough. this man is just holding court eulogizing paul cale. the crowd is all standing on the little hallway leading to the exit from the auditorium, completely obstructing the exit.
ok what’re the odds that cale’s extremely mad son files a lawsuit?
