Sixteen years ago today, “Lost in Translation” premieres in the US.

How about a quick thread on Sofia Coppola’s masterpiece:
2. Coppola based the film on time she spent in Tokyo in her 20’s. “I got married not long before and kind of felt isolated. I was in this stage where I wasn’t sure if I’d made the right choices.”
3. “I’d seen Scarlett in a movie called ‘Manny & Lo’ when she was like 12 and I just loved her. She had that husky voice even then and seemed mature beyond her years.”
4. Coppola spent months chasing Bill Murray to convince him to do the project but couldn’t track him down. She’d heard Al Pacino lived in Murray’s town — and asked him if HE could help. 💯

5. The Suntory sequence was based, in part, on a REAL Suntory ad her father once shot with Japanese film legend Akira Kurosawa. “That was a real photographer,” she said, “and Bill improvised that entire scene.”

6. “I thought it’d be funny to put him in a tuxedo because I hadn’t seen that side of Bill. There was a lot of throwing stuff at Bill and watching him respond.”
7. Coppola gave a great interview to @thedailybeast for the film’s 10th anniversary

8. “Probably the hardest thing was convincing the Park Hyatt Hotel to let us shoot a movie there, because they didn’t want a movie shot there. They would only let us shoot in the hallways and the communal places at 3 or 4 in the morning.”
9. “That thing Bill whispers to Scarlett was never intended to be anything. I was going to figure out later what to say and add it in and then we never did.”

10. Some HAVE tried to adjust the film’s audio mix to hear more closely what Murray said. One theorist says it’s: “I have to be leaving, but I won’t let that come between us. Okay?”

11. “People always ask me what’s said,” smiles Coppola, “I always like Bill’s answer: that it’s between lovers – so I’ll leave it at that.”

12. Finally, “I had a look in mind. It was this kind of dreamy feeling of when you’re jet lagged. There’s all this neon and it had a kind of Blade Runner feel ..”

Those last two minutes, leading into the close .. 💯
