Some news: I'm starting a newsletter.

What's my newsletter going to have? The kinds of stuff I put on Twitter, but also and especially the kind of stuff I'm increasingly leery about posting where an audience of hundreds of thousands will see it, only tens of thousands of whom have any connection to me.
By which I mean personal essays, game design thoughts, stuff that I want to talk about without permanently pre-cringing from drive-by comments by people who don't know the score.
But it will also have the kinds of things I'm used to posting on Twitter but which I don't spend enough time sitting in front of my computer in my office anymore to really develop on Twitter; news commentary, current events, political analysis.
Which is not to say I won't have this stuff on Twitter! Just that an analysis of my life and circumstances has shown me that I don't have as much of this stuff on Twitter anymore as I used to, because my life isn't as centered around Twitter as it once was.

So, in the new Ducktales, Dewey's dream of being a cool high schooler (based on tv shows targeted at middle schoolers) includes an unformed romantic interest he knows he's supposed to have in the scenario but he doesn't know what to do with, so it's just an amorphous cloud.
Interesting thing about this is they have a chorus of voices, male and female presenting, voicing the amorphous romantic interest.
Which is a lot better way of handling "they're too young to know about sexuality!" than assuming all children are straight.

This is what boggles my mind: dude here wants us to believe that he spent ten years developing a craft that doesn't matter.

"I am trying to be the best comedian I can be"... why? To get on SNL? As an end in itself? Can't say "To make people laugh" if you don't care who gets hurt
So what we're left with is what we're left with for every lazy, cowardly comedian like Shane Gillis: "they're just jokes", an argument in which jokes are simultaneously sacred but also useless.

"Just jokes" assumes jokes have no impact, no power to change the world.
What kind of comedian doesn't believe jokes have the power to change the world? To make someone's day... or ruin it. To lift people's spirits, or puncture them. Jokes reflect how we see the world, and shape it.

Sidenote about libraries:

You should never feel guilty about using library's resources. They are public resources, and library funding both in general and for specific things is justified by people coming in and using those resources.
I know that an anonymous online download feels less like it is bothering anybody or taking something away from others than going to a library does... but libraries are there for you.

Whoever you are.
(If your library does not have homeless people in it, it should only be because we finally recognized housing is a human right.)
