Today @BernieSanders previewed his housing plan. We have to take a moment to acknowledge something major: his plan comes from movement demands to upend the housing system, to put people over profit, to move more housing off the market and into public hands.
Most Americans spend most of their income on housing. And yet, housing has been ignored in national politics. It was basically a non-issue in 2016. Now, Bernie joins Warren, Booker, Harris, Castro in presenting a housing agenda. That happened because the movement demanded it.
Of course, just *having* a housing platform can't be our standard. Which is why @BernieSanders plan should excite us all. His comes closer than anyone else's to a vision for a #HomesGuarantee: millions of social homes, universal rent control, and reinvestment in public housing.
The scale that we're talking about, by itself, is astounding. Warren's plan will cost $1 trillion. Bernie's will cost $2.5 trillion. We're no longer in the realm of incrementalism. Thank god. We can't be there anymore. We need massive systems overhaul.
Quibbles/comparisons on a separate thread and after I've eaten (coming straight from a @KCTenants meeting, our biggest yet!). But for now I'm here to say: I'm super fucking proud to be part of a movement of tenants who are demanding a better world. It's working. We're gonna win.
