One of the interesting things about listening to music is encountering music you don’t quite grasp—you know it’s good, but you’re not yet ready to understand what’s happening clearly. Can be frustrating and bewildering.
Giving up right away—running off in horror—is certainly an option, but it’s a bit childish, like declaring “I hate green beans” when you’re 5 and holding to that view into middle age.
I’m thinking of this while listening to the Miles Davis “Complete Plugged Nickel” box set. I bought it in early college, not long after hearing Relaxin, Kind of Blue, etc. I tried hard, but I didn’t yet have the listening experience to understand why it was so special.
