Republicans like Hawley continue to smear Judge Jackson’s record using thoroughly debunked misrepresentations about her sentencing record. Yet recently, they missed a real opportunity to stand up for survivors of sexual abuse—reauthorizing #VAWA. (thread) nytimes.com/2022/03/21/us/…
Less than two weeks ago, many Republican Senators in the room today joined Senator Hawley in voting against a legislative package that included a reauthorization and update of the Violence Against Women Act—a law that protects and assists victims of sexual and domestic violence.
When the cameras are on, some Republicans like Hawley make grand claims about protecting survivors—at Judge Jackson’s expense.

I heard "why not just stay pregnant" multiple times this week
I'm abt to make this #Thread
While there are multiple reasons why people may want an #abortion not risking being murdered or harmed by their DV partner is a frequent one
It's not irrational either
#BansOffOurBodies
ICYMI-Murder is the number one cause of death for pregnant women.
Now if you go to an anti-abortion website their take on this is "men tried to force their partners to have abortions or forced/coerced an abortion thus abortion access is the problem".
Yet anti-choicers do nothing to work on policy that can reduce domestic violence including anti poverty progs since we know financial stress increases risk of DV/IPV
These are the same ppl who make policies claiming a woman being abused who has a child present makes HER an abuser

Bipartisan language in the newly introduced Senate version of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2022 would give expanded powers to state and local prosecutors to pursue domestic abusers who possess firearms illegally.

🧵 Here’s how: revealnews.org/article/how-th…
A 2021 Reveal investigation found that domestic violence gun homicides surged 58% over the last decade.

Many of those victims were killed by abusers who were prohibited from having guns. revealnews.org/article/gun-la…

NEW: The Violence Against Women Act was just introduced in the Senate, but it fails to close the dating partner loophole so that all women - regardless of their marital status - are protected from armed abusers. #vawa cnn.com/2022/02/09/pol…
Right now, people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence are only prohibited gun purchasers if they were married to, lived with, or share a child with their victim. This law ignores the reality that women are as likely to be killed by an abusive dating partner as a spouse.
Failing to include a provision closing the dating partner loophole allows abusive dating partners to have guns and puts women’s lives at risk. Domestic gun violence kills on 70 women on average every single month in the United States.

According to this data, there was a 4% increase in domestic violence shooting deaths in the US in 2020 over 2019, but a 69% increase in Texas; 93% in Maryland; 67% in Missouri; 160% in Utah.

Why won’t the Senate reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act? pbs.org/wgbh/frontline…
The answer: the NRA has threatened to "score" lawmakers who vote in favor of the new version of #vawa, which includes a provision that would make convicted dating partners and stalkers prohibited gun purchasers. google.com/amp/s/www.nyti…
The @NRA's goal is to make sure as many people as possible buy guns, including abusers—even if it costs the lives of our mothers, sisters and daughters.

With lives hanging in the balance, it’s time for women to tell lawmakers whose side we're on: Our own. elle.com/culture/career…

It's actually a sticking point for the NRA, which threatened to "score" lawmakers voting in favor of the new VAWA, which has been reauthorized three times since 1994 with bipartisan support.

Why are some Senators allowing gun lobbyists to write our gun laws and endanger women?
The NRA wages legal battles to ensure domestic abusers stay armed: newyorker.com/news/news-desk…

While trying to block state laws that would prevent abusers from accessing guns, because the NRA claims women *sometimes lie about abuse:* nraila.org/articles/20170…
Since 2010, gun-related murders of intimate partners have increased by 26%. But the NRA’s goal is to make sure as many people as possible buy guns, including dangerous abusers, no matter the cost—even if it costs us the lives of our mothers, sisters and daughters.

on #WomensEqualityDay, I'd like to remind you all the ways Trump has failed women and made life more dangerous for us and how Biden will be a champion for us.

A THREAD
Trump has tried to rip away health care benefits & protections for millions of women. In
the middle of a pandemic, Trump is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Obamacare,
which would allow insurers to deny women coverage because of pregnancy or pre-existing
conditions.
Trump rolled back protections from discrimination/harassment in the workplace. He revoked the Obama-Biden Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces executive order,
which required that federal contractors comply w/ labor, wage an hour, family & medical
leave, safety & health, and civil rights

@morningmika @JoeBiden So there’s a lot to unpack here.

Thread.

First of all, if #BelieveWomen isn’t tempered with basic common sense, then it’s simply blind dogma, and thus quite dangerous and subject to horrible abuses, as I’ve said long before I ever heard the name Tara Reade.

Let’s compare the
@morningmika @JoeBiden cases of Biden and Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh: despite being an only marginally well known public figure prior to his nomination, he had not one but multiple accusers. His known, documented behavior, not to mention his judicial actions, all point to a distinct lack of respect for
@morningmika @JoeBiden women in general. Every chance he’s given to rule on women’s rights and their fundamental freedoms and right to bodily autonomy, he’s proven that he believes they deserve none of those.

We must also consider the consistency of the narrative around his behavior. Very different

Last yr, the Violence Against Women Act expired—& the House passed its reauthorization *290* days ago. Sen Republicans have blocked it.

In those 290 days, an estimated:
- 496 women were shot & killed by partners
- 5.3M kids exposed to domestic violence
- 22 trans people murdered
During the 290 days Sen Republicans have blocked #VAWA—100s of Native American women & girls were murdered or went missing—but we don't know just how many.

That's why Congress must also pass Savanna's Act—to gather this data & address our #MMIWG epidemic. theguardian.com/us-news/2020/j…

No it doesn’t. Because the @NRA is scoring #VAWA, you and @SenJoniErnst removed a provision that closes the boyfriend loophole and prevents those convicted of abusing, assaulting or stalking a dating partner or those subject to court restraining orders from buying or owning guns.
The @NRA’s goal is to make sure as many people as possible buy guns, including dangerous abusers, no matter the cost, even if it costs us the lives of our mothers, sisters and daughters, and @SenJohnKennedy and @SenJoniErnst are complicit. #VAWA elle.com/culture/career…
