Are there really only two possible relationships between the UK and the other 27 countries of the EU? No?

So does it make ANY sense to have a referendum choice between a relationship defined by 100s of pages of international treaty - VS - LITERALLY ANY OTHER relationship?
Worse still, after people obviously vote for the CHANCE of a better relationship, does it make sense to let MPs decide what it should be with ZERO input from the people?

EVEN worse, to ignore the fact that the majority voted against a No-Deal relationship in the 2017 election?
So...
We know the referendum choice to leave the EU officially said nothing about the relationship that would result from that.
We know that not all leavers want a No-Deal relationship.
We know there's no majority for any other relationship...

So... We just do what Farage says?

Can I just address this 2-stage referendum idea?
1⃣ Leave vs Remain
Let's say 45% want our current relationship with the EU and 55% want a new one
2⃣ Deal vs No Deal
Let's say 80% of the original 55% want No-Deal. That's still only 44% overall who'd get their 1st choice. 44%<45%
Now I was generous in favour of leave with all of those figures and it still produced a democratic travesty.
That 2-stage referendum represents what's happening now. Because the majority/loudest of the Leave voters are calling for a No-Deal Brexit, that's what Boris Johnson is pushing us towards. But as the maths above shows...
A majority of a majority isn't necessarily a majority.

No. Nobody with even half a brain cell on the left would do that if they were aware of the historical significance of Caucasian people painting themselves into #BlackFace. (gollywogs etc) So it's clearly something @JustinTrudeau did before he learned what it meant.
To anyone accusing me of being biased or inconsistent, suggesting that I'm only taking this position on blackface because I Iike Justin Trudeau.... Here's a thread I made over a year ago about people I'd never even heard of...
Honest opinion:
Blackface to imitate black people in general has historical connotations making it racist AF.
Blackface as an homage to a character/celeb you love doesn't make you racist... but unless Spielberg does your makeup it won't look good enough not to look disrespectful.

If the UK is no longer an integrated part of the European Market, then we're no longer a logical base of European distribution.

That means if you want to sell stuff across Europe, it doesn't make sense to employ people in a UK that's outside the main European market.
Every Market has trade barriers.
If you wanted to sell across Europe, and you were looking to set up a factory in either an integrated Single Market which covers 30 European countries, with 500 million customers, or a market of 65 million customers, where would you put it?
Concrete example:
You own Nissan.

Nissan's Sunderland factory sends 70% cars to EU countries.
A trade barrier between UK & EU means 70% of your cars face extra cost.
If your factory was on the other side of the barrier, it'd be 30%

Where do you put it?

1 - Yes, we want to grow it! #UK #Automotive exports £1 billion engines to Turkey, twice as much as the entire North-American region and second only to the EU. British engines are assembled into passenger cars and CVs exported from Turkey to the UK and other European countries.

Thank you @jillongovt for posting this-must listen. Great to have a focus on the future. Interestingly I disagree with Sir Ivan on his portrayal of the #EU approach to negs- technocratic & run by the theologians & not strategic in summary. @BrigidLaffan
In my view EU had 3 strategic interests to protect in Brexit negs which it has done. 1. Following the portrayal of EU as weak & disintegrating during ref, EU had to assert its centrality in Europe. @BrigidLaffan
2. Membership has to matter/a departing state that wants to retain a lot of the status quo cannot be allowed to do so. 3. The rules based system had to be protected. @BrigidLaffan

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/
"This could be mitigated by changes to the backstop itself," she wrote to @eucopresident & @JunckerEU "Proposals for a way in which the UK could choose to exit the backstop unilaterally were it ever to come into force, or for a hard time limit... 2/
on the duration of the usage of the backstop, have been raised and discussed in Parliament. We have also raised them previously in negotiations." So there are her proposals, i.e. the EU should basically just cave on backstop in face of House of Commons defeat. But but but ... 3/

Air boxing by top #UK officials is amazing. Who punching at? Unlike in London, #Brexit never been much fight in Brussels, more lament. When some urged penalty in financial settlement, EU ignored & just tabbed up #'s. Citizen rights a 2-way street. Other stuff mainly logistical..
Point again is not to take any side, but merely point out Brussels has had consistent principles, goals & negotiating positions from the start. London still has no consensus on final objective. No one I know in #EU has advocated for "no deal" but some in #UK actually do that...
Have had many many long conversations w/ top London colleagues. Am very conscious of all arguments & concerns on #UK side, incl over Northern Ireland. But even in no deal scenario, #UK will end up facing exact same choice on future relationship w/ EU as now, but w/o transition...
