Before chicks arrival, the following are necessary:
1. Take out all equipments and clean with fresh water, then soak in disinfectant water containing Formalin or Viracid
2. Remove old litters,clear cobwebs, scrape and wash the floor using Caustic soda using pressure hose.

3. If available, pply white lime on the walls and floor and leave the pen for another one week. Remove all grasses and vegetation around the poultry house.
4. Make the air tight brooding house. Spread the sawdust. Fumigate again with formaldehyde based liquid such as Formalin

5. Before the chicks arrive, make necessary arrangement for coal pots for heating the pen. Clean the water tank and discharge old water stored. Don't breed salmonella.
6. On the day of chicks arrival, arrange the feeding nd watering equipment, at 1/50 chicks.

7. Add medicines in water as required. I normally start with mild antibiotics containing Neomycin and Doxycycline and Vitalyte.
8. Sprinkle feed on the trays, avoid putting too much feed on the tray to avoid wastage.

Make sure the birds are transported early in the morning or late in the night.
On arrival:
9. Open the boxes and ensure chicks are alive and active. Count o confirm the numbers. This is important to avoid you being shortchanged.

11. Water is most important, make water available when releasing the birds into the brooder.
12. Avoid over heating the brooder, note that if the temperature is low, chicks clusters and if it's too high, chicks move away from the coal pot.
