PoliSci methods folks: would you say Seawright and Gerring is the easiest "choosing qual vs quant methods" piece, or the Goertz and Mahoney? I am also considering the Prakash et al 2007 ISR piece on "should we discard the qual vs quant distinction?"

I just realised I missed the Mahoney & Goertz "Tale of Two Cultures" which if paired with Prakash et al would make for a nice "here's what you should know about qual vs quant" and counterpoint "maybe the distinction isn't all that useful after all". Thoughts?

Micro-thread on “the gap in the literature” and critical analysis of claims. Jones (2019) argues that sociology has eschewed CSR, ethical consumerism and greenwashing as research topics. Especially greenwashing. I instinctively feel this is not accurate. But I’m not a sociologist
But if I were a scholar of consumption with an interest in “greener production/consumption” (sociology, anthropology, geography), I would be tempted to test Jones’ claims by doing a systematic literature review. Proving/disproving Jones would be a contribution to the literature!
This is something I tell my students: “somebody out there found a gap in the literature. You can do rigorous, solid research to prove or disprove the existence of this gap, or choose a strand of knowledge to help fill it. Both are solid ways to contribute to scholarship”.

Quick micro-thread on feeling stuck in your #AcWri, inspired by something that happened to me as I was reading Ellis Jones' paper on greenwashing journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117… - this paper has a solid, if a little bit hypercritical lit review on advertising, branding, greenwashing
Everything would have been fine (and was!) until I got to THIS sentence. I’m like “WAIT A MINUTE! That’s a mis-representation and mis-interpretation of Szasz 2007!” This prompted me to start writing a memo to counter Ellis’ argument. I should note I have a memo on Szasz 2007.
What Szasz DOES say (as my memorandum shows) is that there is higher likelihood that, because consumers protect themselves using inverse quarantine (aka purchasing bottled water), there is a higher risk of "political anesthesia", disinterest in pushing for better infrastructure.

Hilo ósea mi Twitter hispano parlante sobre anotaciones, subrayado y el modelo de Botas Cornell. Yo uso el Cornell Notes Method solamente con artículos, libros y capítulos. Hay quienes toman nota en clase usando ese modelo. A mí no me encanta para notas de clase.
En mi lectura del resumen me doy cuenta que el autor ofrece una definición relational de greenwashing (que se traduce como “pseudo-enverdecimiento”, y que por el “washing” denota una connotación negativa. Mi subrayado (izq) y mis Notas Cornell (der) muestran los temas clave.
Como pueden observar en mi subrayado y notas al margen, muchas ideas se repiten en la introducción que eran claras en el resumen del artículo. En mis Notas Cornell ya no repito lo que se ha dicho, pero sí anoto citas textuales clave que puedo insertar en un memorándum o artículo.

I opened "information disorder" session today at #IGF2018 @intgovforum @igf2018paris, and was asked to provide quick overview of some key research findings.

Key points: we need conceptual clarity, more research outside US, and collaborative responses

Folks: Did you know the sealed Road Map that the Watergate prosecutors asked to be turned over to Congress on March 1, 1973 was not the only document the Watergate prosecutors produced that day? There was one more. It was public. And it was a blockbuster. What was it??? 1/
It was an indictment like no other. On March 1, 1973, Watergate prosecutors also charged seven Nixon aides in U.S. v. Mitchell. Adding substantial flesh to the Road Map’s bones, the indictment alleged a detailed narrative of the Watergate conspiracy and relevant law. 2/
As reported even then, though he wasn’t named, the allegations in the Watergate conspiracy case pointed to Nixon as a co-conspirator. In other words, just as Mueller has been doing, Watergate prosecutors brilliantly managed to speak clearly to the public through court filings. 3/

Les enseignants connaissent bien le réseau Canopé / ex-CNDP. Cet organisme de @EducationFrance a pour principale mission de produire et diffuser des ressources pédagogiques à destination des profs (latin/histoire, ici).

1/ Interesting @TCFdotorg report about ballot access & health policy. Some good stuff & lots of poli sci citations. It's worth noting that these grafs reflect precisely what I find in chap 4 of #FragmentedDemocracy
2/ Drawing on pre-ACA data (indeed, health politics & policy were happening pre-ACA), I find that Medicaid beneficiaries living in states that expanded benefits were more likely to participate in politics, while those living in sates that reduced them were less likely to do so
3/ But I want to make an important note about my approach to this kind of work. While I draw on survey data & offer quant analyses in #FragmentedDemocracy, I also make a point of highlighting & centering the voices, experiences & perspectives of Medicaid beneficiaries.
