Putin cannot leave power in Russia because he knows what happens to mafia bosses who try to retire. Trump is in a similar position, afraid to lose presidential immunity. Two desperate men with great power. Watch out.
Not treating Putin appropriately—as an aggressor waging war on the US & its allies—helped get us Trump in 2016. Don't underestimate him in 2020 now that he has his favorite candidate in office. My op-ed: washingtonpost.com/opinions/globa…

AI bias is human bias, but amplified, the way an industrial robot can make a million manufacturing mistakes in a day if designed or programmed incorrectly. So we must be cautious about how this power is directed.

Indeed. The myth of engagement, that dictatorships would liberalize and become more like the free world due to economic ties, has been convincingly refuted once more by Putin and Xi Jinping.
Putin took all the western money, all the photo-ops with democratic leaders, & used them to crush opposition & civil society in Russia. Then he pivoted to open aggression against the engagers, and they still won't wake up.
Engagement is appeasement & the flow of political influence is one-way. It funds domestic repression & spreads authoritarian corruption to the free world. It gives dictatorships open access to free world money, tech, financial & legal systems, and media.

Trump's Syria move is another inexplicable gift to Putin and will have real human costs, not just destroying American credibility as an ally and provoking issues within NATO (Putin's real dream.)
Americans want to disentangle from foreign wars and huge military spending. But power abhors a vacuum and Americans aren't going to like the new-old world order of regional power struggles & global instability.
As the world's largest economy, no nation benefits more than the US from stability & being a reliable ally. Putin & other dictatorships want a purely transactional model, based not on shared values but on quid pro quo, to coin a phrase.

The West, being overtaken by China & those allied with it has repeatedly signaled its intent to weaken those rising to threaten its continued ability to be World Control HQ.

The East has largely until recently hoped for a change of heart & a return to sanity.
