Democratic leadership won’t do its constitutional duty and impeach because they’re afraid it’ll interfere with the 2020 Election. It’s absolutely integral they start looking past elections and see how this failure can lead to very, very dangerous consequences. 1/
The case for impeachment is airtight. It was written by a trusted Republican lawmaker in Robert Mueller. Trump has committed several impeachable crimes, but in order to make the case, we have to move past Trump and see what failure reaps. 2/
First and foremost, we need to realize Trump isn’t the end case of this moment. Several groups are looking at his election and reverse-engineering it for future candidates and campaigns. Many are even more dangerous than him. 3/
The truth is that Trump is just an irrational actor. He’s incompetent and has, through his thrashing, uncovered many vulnerabilities in the system. He’s a test case for many, including white supremacists/ethnonationalists who find him quite useful. 4/
Trump’s behavior, and the system’s inability and unwillingness to hold him accountable has displayed for anyone looking for them the vulnerabilities and openings for unethical behavior. It’s a roadmap for future politicians who can lie and commit crimes without fear. 5/
Make no mistake, people are taking notes. Trump is a battering ram and all it’s going to take to gain power for future figures, who will be more disciplined and have their own actual ideology, is to follow his path. 6/
It gets worse. Global climate change is going to shake our political order completely. We’re going to be dealing with mass refugee crises, wars of changed geography and resources, a really, REALLY volatile situation. It’s coming and our politics will get very dire. 7/
Fascism and totalitarianism, which we’re seeing arise with Trump, grows where there is a complicated crisis, a power group in crisis, and a vacuum of easy solutions. These people studying Trump and his appeal are going to use these crises to gain power. 8/
History tells us this is inevitable. When climate change hits it’s going to hit disadvantaged people. It’s going to lead to discrimination, fascism, and economic grift and disorder. We need to start building a defense against this now. 9/
Democrats are stuck in the present and immediate future, but failure to establish boundaries and consequences now, particularly when the public supports it, is essential to heading off what is going to be a hell of a future crisis. 10/
What follows Trump is anybody’s guess, but it doesn’t take a psychic to see that Democrats passing on their duty, passing on the right thing, will have consequences for generations. Letting Trump go unchecked is an undeniable way to damn the future. It has to be done. 11/11
