On @Channel4News tonight: Food charities and industry tell government “Stop passing the buck” on responsibility for ensuring vulnerable people can get the food they need in a #NoDeal Brexit food crisis.” Pensioners, children in low-income families, people who are ill or disabled.
Government’s Yellowhammer #NoDeal Briefing says food prices could go up, serious delays and disruption to food supply. With 8.4m people in this country already food insecure, “What happens if demand for emergency food aid goes up? Whose job is it to step in?” asks @Channel4News
Serious concerns over food supply for vulnerable people in a #NoDeal Brexit shared by @UKSustain @FareShareUK @provtrade @FWDwholesale @IFAN_UK @CityHarvest_LDN - with no-deal price hikes and disruption now imminent @DWP must allocate hardship fund- long heralded, never confirmed
When pressed @ZacGoldsmith for @DefraGovUK says that Defra is not responsible for securing our food supply in an emergency (no-deal or any other) and that the expertise and experience resides with the commercial food industry. Wait... what does the food industry think...?
@Channel4News asks Provision Trade Federation Andrew Kuyk, whose members include really big names like @Danone @ArlaDairyUK - a diplomatic answer, saying he’s sure Government must have a crisis food plan and it’d be nice if they’d show it to leading food industry trade bodies...
..Over to Ed Salt of @DelamereDairy - really nice dairy chap saying it really isn’t scaremongering to suggest food prices will go up in a #NoDeal Brexit. But is it the food industry’s job to seek out vulnerable people and struggling schools to ensure they get the food they need?
Back at a Glasgow #FoodBank: Whose responsibility is it to ensure vulnerable people get the food they need in a no-deal Brexi? Very nice volunteer chap, no hesitation, “It’s the Government’s. It was their idea. So they need to prepare for the implications.” Spot on! Well said.
(At a #foodbank surrounded by tin after tin after packet after packet after tin. Is this how our fellow citizens and tens of thousands of children are being fed when they hit rock bottom? Not the #foodbank’s fault, but what has become of this country that we treat people so?)
Want to see where this “passing the buck” story came from? Months and months of @UKSustain trying to get someone - anyone - to step up and take responsibility for securing food for vulnerable people in a a no-deal Brexit. sustainweb.org/blogs/sep19_go…
During 2019, I have briefed or spoken to: 45 local resilience forums, 33 London boroughs, 21 Secretaries of State, 9 CEOs of large local authorities, 7 government departments. And securing food supplies for vulnerable people in a crisis is always “somebody else's responsibility”.
Time is now running out. No-deal is a disaster for food, farmers and vulnerable people. But if it does happen, we need to be resourced and prepared. This is your last chance @michaelgove and @theresecoffey - no more delay. TIME FOR A HARDSHIP FUND. sustainweb.org/news/sep19_min…
@michaelgove @theresecoffey Please join @UKSustain in calling for a hardship fund, to help vulnerable people get the food they need in the event of a no-deal Brexit. sustainweb.eaction.org.uk/no_deal_no_meal
Have you seen this @cinnamontoastuk @LabourHunger ?
@TrussellTrust @dwppressoffice @DefraGovUK @IFAN_UK @FareShareUK @right2fooduk @JustFairUK @churchpoverty @FoodMatters_org @Food_Foundation Feeling pretty grim that #TheCameronYears created the austerity that contributed to over a million people being referred to emergency #foodbanks last year. Comfy to retire to a shepherd's hut, paid to write about it. Not so comfortable to experience food insecurity every day.
@UKSustain @FareShareUK @provtrade @FWDwholesale @IFAN_UK @CityHarvest_LDN @DWP @TrussellTrust @DefraGovUK @ProfTimLang @trussliz @michaelgove @Food_Foundation @JustFairUK Here's the Channel 4 News item based on the work of @UKSustain address the question: "Who is responsible for securing food for vulnerable people in a no-deal Brexit?" (plot spoiler: "always someone else") channel4.com/news/no-deal-b…
