It's understandable some people might feel anxiety when others are running around telling them the world is going to end in 12 years. Just like people hyping school shootings and encouraging constant drills, the alarmism is doing more harm than it's helping lead to solutions..
Reality: Climate changes over time. We have recently experienced a short period of warming. There is strong evidence to suggest that one contributing factor in that shift is human activity.

What that means: Humans must prepare for and adapt to climate changes.
From a policy perspective: That means we have to look for ways to balance progress/lifestyles with our desire to limit human impact of AGW and we must encourage innovation that will help us deal with climate change.
Alarmism is simply a way to push for drastic change to reallocate power. They claim that reallocation is needed to force major change to address climate change, but their solutions will not actually solve climate change challenges and are rarely aimed at adaptation.
Scaring people about something they have limited to no control over and demanding them handing gov't power to ruin their standard of living will magically solve the complex challenges we face is pure charlatanism aimed at cultish and ignorant followers.
There are real policies we should be pursuing to try to face these challenges, but they require an intelligent, honest, and thoughtful approach which is completely lacking in these discussions. Most of all, they require progress and innovation, not going back to the dark ages.
Or I guess people can follow a doomsday cult led by ignorant politicians and celebrities who clearly don't believe what they're selling, but view it as a great opportunity to gain attention, reallocate power, and virtue signal for a cause.
