Here, @JuliaHB1 raises an interesting example of why utilitarianism is not a plausible moral philosophy.
Most people would regard it as morally unjustifiable for someone to raise the risk of violence, in these fractious and emotional times, towards a controversial public figure and his children by publishing his address.
Julia, however, is a utilitarian. In her view the pleasure she obtains from publishing her snarky comment outweighs the increased risk of violence.
Even though, here, we can rule out the possibility that anyone else would have obtained significant pleasure from her snarky comment, she may be right that her delight in her snarkiness is greater than the increased fear and concern caused to the public figure & his family.
It may even exceed the pain If violence actually does follow. Who knows?
Julia is obviously a utilitarian, and has acted morally by her compass. But I think the rest of us can disagree.
