No, the climate change protest that caused DC gridlock yesterday wasn't mistargeting by hurting regular commuters instead of big fossil fuel companies. The regular commuters are a big part of the problem, writes @petulad:

Well well, look what country is taking out full-page promo ads (WSJ) one year exactly after killing and dismembring Jamal Khashoggi.
Am hearing from commenters that these ads are also in USA Today and all over YouTube. So...which US ad firm scored the Saudi post-murder rehabilitation account? Pretty sweet.
And go go Google and Gannett, too, I guess!

This week, the Baltimore Sun is losing three pivotal journalists. Two are leaving to do PR at Johns Hopkins, the most powerful institution in town: @DougDonovan, whose reporting led to resignation of two mayors, & editorial page editor @andrewagreen, who will now lead Hopkins PR.
@DougDonovan @andrewagreen These are big gains for Johns Hopkins, but big losses for The Sun, and thus big losses for Baltimore, which as recent years have shown has an even greater need than other cities for a vigorous press.

I don't think we've yet fully grasped the cost of local journalism's decline.
@DougDonovan @andrewagreen On the upside, the Sun is hiring to fill these slots. Apply! It's one of the wildest and most eventful cities to cover in America, where your purpose as a journalist is never in doubt.

This is like saying “The tobacco industry could solve cigarette addiction” or “The plastic industry could solve plastic pollution.” It’s a fundamentally nonsensical notion, because the only way those industries can solve those problems is by going out of business. THREAD
The fossil fuel industry recognized this early on. By the 1980s, it realized global warming is primarily a fossil fuel problem, and it acknowledged that stopping it was an existential threat to the industry.
The only way to stop global warming was (and is) to stop putting fossil carbon into the air. The fossil fuel industry cannot survive under that condition. It knew and acknowledged this decades ago.

Leaving @USChamber was a good first step, but until recently, its other trade group @TechNetUpdate didn’t even name climate or clean energy as priorities.

Many other leading companies still support muscle-bound lobbying groups like the @USChamber and @ShopFloorNAM, which are inveterate opponents in Congress of climate action, often contrary to their members’ views.

This is a great story that imagines what the world looks like in 2050, when we've solved climate change. It's hopeful and smart journalism. But with its focus on technology and business, it misses the policy and politics necessary to get us there. npr.org/sections/goats…
It's hard to imagine how people are willing to sacrifice lifestyle in the way this article envisions when we are barely even talking about climate change in the media. mediamatters.org/research/2019/…
And it's hard to imagine how we get fossil fuel companies to stop fighting tooth and nail every small increase in the cost of their dangerous products. These companies still have subsidies. We are still building new fossil fuel infrastructure. Right now they are winning.

One thing in the way of effective action on our #climate crisis (and our toxics crisis, our biodiversity crisis, our plastics in the ocean crisis, not to mention our violence, war, poverty, racism, & sexism crises) is a terrible misunderstanding of who/what we are.
Many people speak about this as a spiritual/moral crisis and I agree. But, the misunderstanding I want to talk about is at once simpler and more profound.
(Note - when I say 'we' I mean those of us acculturated into the western industrial growth mindset, which in evolutionarily relevant timescales has only been around for a fleeting instant. Humans haven't always thought this way, and not all humans alive today think this way.)

Yesterday, at an interesting #ClimateWeekNYC panel on fighting denial (organized by @ColumbiaClimate, @Sallan_Found, @earthinstitute, & @ClimSciDefense) @jeffnesbit made some excellent points I want to circulate.

First point: Nesbit reported that his research shows that trying to inoculate teenagers against tobacco advertising by telling them that smoking will make them die before their time doesn't work. But....

Telling teenagers that they're being targeted and manipulated by tobacco companies who are shamelessly trying to addict them actually *does* make them much less likely to take up smoking.

If you haven’t had the two hours necessary to devote to reading “Losing Earth” the full issue article on climate change in @NYTmag, let me summarize it for you: the central thesis is plain wrong. We are not all to blame for the climate crisis. nytimes.com/interactive/20… 1/
Who, exactly, is this “we” the author speaks of as being responsible for the unfolding climate crisis? Is it me, someone who wasn’t yet born when his story begins? Is it poor people who emit next-to-nothing or illiterate people who haven’t even heard of climate change? 2/
The article completely neglects institutions for an actor-oriented (white male) narrative. There are institutions--fossil fuel corporations and electric utilities--who have profited off of continuing pollution since 1989, when the article's story ends. 3/
